According to Obuse Winery and
St.Cousair Winery, there were a few customers
looking for Kusunoki's wine. I am so grateful
for them.
Besides my direct sales and internet shopping,
only Urano Shuho and Tusnoda Saketen are selling
my wines. Suyasin Shoten sometimes sells my
Cidre, too but not so many bottle shops here
in Suzaka. Most of them are would not take risk
to handle unknown wines. Only when TV or papers
deals my products, shop owners place limited
number of orders. It is a pity but my efforts
to introduce my wines may not be enough, too.
I will try to find a structure to make them
handle my wines.
A good news from a rice farmer in Suzaka.
I always buy rice from her family. I asked
another lot the other day but there was no more
rice! They were sold out! She said many people
wanted to buy their rice this year. As I introduced
their rice at many occasion, I was also happy.
Maybe more people begin to look at the local
products! We need to put more efforts to make
local people know the availablity of local foods.
Let's eat local foods a lot more!
)
When to drink wine ?
Sometimes, I feel a wine better 3 days after
opening bottle with better aroma and more
complexity. I said to a researcher at AWRI who
visited Japan recently and he commented same thing.
Of course, the wine bottle is closed and kept in
cool and dark place like refregerator. Small portion
of air can induce mild oxidation of wine which may bring good
influence, I wonder.
I find my Merlot tastes better on day 2 or 3 after opening
bottle. The photograph shows my Merlot on day 3 and first vintage
Sauvignon Blanc on day 1.
I found a chardonnay 2005 (Michelot) from Burgandy, France turned to be much better on day 3. I felt it a bit tight or hard on the day 1.
Wines need some time to reach equilibrium in its reductive-oxidative condition to make feel it with better taste.
Therefore we don't need to be discouraged so quickly with a wine. We can try it on next day and may find it better.

I saw a monkey today. It was at the road side of the
Suzaka-Yamada route near big parking in Takayama-mura
village just below a baby clinic.
The moneky seemed to have a leek in its mouth.
When my car approached, it stepped aside for about
10m toward Yagisawagawa river but did not run away!
I believe that they will soon begin crossing the
busy road for food. I heard that monkey are causing
big problems in Shiga hotel area.
The famous Sonow Monkey sounds cute and is very popular
among the foreign visitors but it is terrible if your crops
or fruit were damaged.
I have so far seen phesants in my vineyrads
which is OK but I have seen a serow before in an apple
orchard nearby and one of my friends caught
a baby monkey in a trick cage and other wild animals
cuase damages, too. How can we cope with them ?
It was another winter's day. Cloudy,
snow, cloudy...cold!
There is so much snow in the Chardonnay
vineyard!
A new project will begin this Spring
to make Suzaka a Japanese premium
wine area.
One of my friends will start growing winegrape
this year. He is working full time and his old parents
have been taking care of apples and grapes but they
cannot do it anymore due to physical condition. So
he has to take care of the orchard and vineyard.
He can manage apples and a few vines on the weekday
working basis but not so many vines as Kyoho grapes
needs a lot of care. Many vines were cut down and there
is wide open space under the overhead trellis.
I proposed him to grow winegrapes there as they are not
so much troulesome as Kyoho. He agreed with me. I will plant
rootstocks and graft on them. Mowing and spraying are necessary but
he can do them when he has to do for his Kyoho. Bunch forming or wrapping are not necessary so winegrape growing is much
simpler than table grapes.
I will buy the fruit and in the worst case, he can sell the grapes with the expected quality in this region to any winery around. The sale price is lower than that of table grapes but hardwork is not needed in any case. When the worst comes worst, he can graft table grapes which is rather easy.
If he finds another job after his retirement, he will not have
enough time again, either. This way, he can maintain his vineyard
alive. We can protect much of the vineyards which are now cultivated by old parents and probably detined to be abondaned.
I have to have my winery soon in order to make this scheme work!
Please cross your fingers for me.
It is said that China temporarily suspends
food export to Japan. It might be retaliation
for the food poisoning of Chinese made damplings
happened in Japan.
Japanese government would be forced to settle
this issue by adding up governmental development
aid to China or by giving away money under the
excuse of helping develop Chinese quarantine system
,etc.
Set aside the what's going on, the time has come
to think about what we are going to do if
food import is suspended. We have only less than 40%
of food self-suppy and depend on import more than 60%!
If China really suspended the food export, we have no
choice but to structure food security system. It might be
a good chance for the Japanese to think about the risk.
The photograph shows the sparrows looking for food in the
scattered ground mostly covered with snow
which seems to be a suggestive scenery.
First of all people would argue about the risk distribution by
seeking other food exporting countries like Korea, Vietnam,
Thailand, Taiwan,etc.
However, that is not a real solution. We have to think
about the food mileage issue and soon or later these
dispersion of the resources will end up with a very
limited number of countries. That is what we have seen
in case of oil import.
We have to imcrease the domestic suppy. The encumberance
is always the price. Domestic produce is considered more
expensive than import food but the problem is the cheap
price of import produce. With the historical and structural
problems about the small farm land and small size farmers are
the reasons of higher production cost. We cannot compete on
the price.
We need develop certain social structure to organize the
consumers who prefer buying mainly domestic produces.
Import quota or tax, or subsidizes to the domestic
products tend to face the international criticism.
Not a governmental action but consumers' one would not
call such criticism. I wonder if there will be a supermarket
which sells only domestic products. Oh, there is. Farmers' market like Green Farm. Such farmers' market may evolve as sustainning
dinning tale for the Japanese.
Japanese consumers may feel better with the domestic produce
in terms of agricaltural chemicals. It may be believed that
Japanese farmers do not use dangerous chemicals so much as in
China. Let's encourage people to buy local produce more.
