先日超接写のできるデジカメを手にした友人が撮って送ってくれた写真を紹介します。すくすくと伸びている新梢に、ベビーコーンみたいに見えるのが房の小さいものです。この、粒粒一つ一つが葡萄の粒になります。新梢当たり2ないし3個の房ができます。此の写真ではとりあえず2房分が見えますね。房は、実は巻きひげの変化したものなんです。その原形は約1年前に今年の芽が出来るときに、既に出来ています。それが巻きひげになるか、房になるかは植物ホルモンの加減で決まります。ジベレリンはその1種です。

My friend took a close up picture of baby bunch of chardonnay. You can see two baby-corn like cluster on the new shoot. Two to three bunches are usually made on a new shoot. The bunch (or cluster in USA) primodium was produced around one year ago in the baby bud. The bunch is the transformed shape of the tendril. Whether the one becomes a bunch or tendril is decided by the balance of plant hormones, for example by gibberellic acid in the bud.

今日はいい天気でした。午前中は苗の植え替えとかやっていましたが、午後東京の友人が訪ねて来ました。彼とは学生時代にパリで会ってからの付き合いです。私は、商社から航空機のリース会社、そして葡萄とワイン作りとやることを変えていますが、かれはずっとアパレルの世界で頑張っています。シャルドネ畑には、ちょうど4年前に開墾しているときに家族で寄ってくれました。4年前の、形になっていない開墾中の畑がこんな葡萄畑になっていて驚いたとのこと。これから作ろうとしているワイナリーについても辛口のコメントをもらっていい刺激になりました。私も、畑の周りの人から随分立派になったねとか、大分畑らしくなったねと言われると嬉しいです。若芽は順調に伸びていますが、葉っぱの端々に虫食いの後が見えるのが気に掛かります。カメムシですかね～。

It's a fine day today. An old friend of mine visited me from Tokyo this afternoon. We have been friends since we met each other in Paris when we were students. I changed job from a trading company, an aircraft leasing company to current grapegrowing and winemaking but he has been in apparel business ever since. He and his family visited this chardonnay vineyard when I was developping it from kyoho vineyard. He said he was surprised with the change. He gave me some good advice on my winery project,too. It's good to hear good comments on my vineyard from friends and people near the vineyards.

I found some bite-like damage on the young leaves. I wonder what has caused them on my precious chardonnay leaves.

変な天気です。一昨日長野では31.8度と真夏日でしたが、昨日は嵐の様な大雨に風、そして今日は震えるような寒さです。コタツがありがたい。暖冬で、2月はとても暖かくこれは葡萄の季節が早く始まるぞと思っていたんですが、その後寒さが続いて、なんと巨峰の開花と展葉が例年より5日も遅れています。でも寒かった昨年よりはいずれも3日早いんですけどね～。昨日は標高の高い峰の原・菅平では雪が降ったそうです。　写真は雲の上の住人福永さんが送ってくれた雪景色になった根子岳です。

We have weird weatehr recently. The temperature here went up to 31.8C a few days ago. Yesterday, it rained very hards with strong winds. It was a cold day today. I appreciated my kotatsu heater very much today. We had warm winter with very little snow and we expected early grapegrowing season this spring. However, to our surprise, the bud break was late by 5 days than usual year (it was, though, 3 days earlier than last year.) It snowed up in the mountain yesterday at Minenohara. The pictuer was sent from the resident there, Fukunaga san.

今日も午前中は草刈りです。畝間は乗用モーアーという草刈機でやり、株間はビーバーというよく皆さんが道端でもみる長い柄の先に回転するディスクやビニール紐のついた機械を使います。でも、幹の直近の周囲の草は手でむしります。それで、此の時期1反分(10a)に約100から170くらいの葡萄の樹がありますので、気の遠くなるような作業です。除草剤を使うところが多いのですが、私はある程度草をはやしてから刈っています。草があるとその下の地中にはミミズなどの虫がいて、その排泄物を食べたり草の根っこにつく微生物が色んな栄養分を作り出します。ですから、ある程度の草は肥料と考えています。でも、やはり草刈は大変です。手で草を引きちぎったり、抜いていたりすると、樹の様子が微妙に分かります。地表の幹から根っこを伸ばしている樹もありますし、今年は鼠だかモグラだかの穴が随分多いな～、今年は株間にロータリーでもかけようか、などと考えたりもします。今日は、元気そうなシャルドネなのに、クラウンゴールという日本名「根頭癌腫」という病気にかかった樹を一本見つけました。凍害で出来た傷に地中のウイルスが入り込んでやがては樹を枯らしてしまうといわれるこの病気（でもまだその原因ウイルスが特定できていない）に、このシャルドネ畑でかかったのは初めて見つけました。標高の高い、昨年凍害の出たピノ畑では多くでましたが、…。で、その腫瘍の部分を鎌でたたいていたら、幹がぽっくりと折れてしまいました。案の定樹の幹の内部はほぼ枯れていました。しょうがないので、元気そうな枝を切って挿し木しましたが、果たして着くかどうか。しばらく様子見です。

でも、なぜ草刈が必要なんでしょう？　それは、草があると地熱が上がらずに生育が順調に進まないし、遅霜の原因にもなる、虫などの巣になりそこから樹に悪影響を及ぼす虫が樹に取り付いたりする、葉っぱを食べる虫の格好な隠れ家になる、湿気がたまり病原菌の蔓延の原因になる、作業効率が極端に悪くなる、等々つまり病害虫の巣窟状態で、余りいいことが無いのです。

午後は、雨が降りそうな天気なのでオブセワイナリーへシードルやワインを取りに行きました。2時過ぎから大雨になり、畑作業を切り上げてきたワイナリーのスタッフの方達と急遽シードルのラベル貼りとキャップシール付けをやりました。ビン詰め後まだ貼ってなかったのです。楠ヴィニヤーズのシードル約700本が出来ました。あと辛口を数百本やれば今年の分はほぼ完了です。

写真はおとといのシャルドネ畑の様子と、巨峰畑の様子です。巨峰の展葉が大分進んできています。側芽も旺盛なので、そろそろその側芽を除く芽かきという作業がはじまります。

I am very busy with weed control now. Weed control? Yes, mowing, pulling and cutting weeds in the vineyards. Many people use chemicals like round-up or basta as weed is rampant under the humid weather in Japan. I use engine mower (like a go-cart or golf buggy) in between the rows, hand mower (engined) under the vines and my own hands just around the trunks.　Why is weed control necessary ? Because i)the ground temperature does not go up and it delays the vine growth, ii) lower ground temperature causes frost damage, iii) we can provide the protection for the lavae and worms which damage the vine, iv) weed can keep humidity to grow hungus and disease to the vines, etc. On the other hand, weed root system can provide certain environment with the earthworms which further provide food with microbes that produce nutrients to the vines. I keep certain growth of the weeds to benefit from these microbes unlike other growers who tend to use herbicides to control weeds. However, manual weed control is really hard and really a hard job to accomplish.

In the afternoon, it rained very hard as weather forecast. I was at the Obuse winery to pick up some of my cidres and wines. I also joined the staff to paste the labels and put capseals on my cidre bottles. Please try my cidres which are made of selected local fuji apples only.

The pictures above are; i) chardonnay vineyards two days ago and ii) kyoho vineyrds. The new shoots are growing. You can find secondary buds/shoots at the bottom of the new shoots. They should be removed by hand. This operation will start pretty soon in the kyoho vineyrds.

昨日は一日中雨。ようやく少し休めました。苗植え会のあと、他の畑の草刈りやったり、アンカーワイヤーを作ったり中柱を打ち込んだりと、結構忙しくしています。毎日なんだかんだとやらなければならないことが山積です。今年２年目と３年目になるセミヨンが元気です。収穫量はまだ少ないでしょうが、楽しみです。４年目のシャルドネは畑全体が一時に発芽・展葉してきました。これまた元気そうで、収穫が楽しみです。それまでの世話はありますが、高品質の葡萄が取れたらいいな。

さて、先日の苗植え会でお手伝いいただきながら名前がわからなかった方々。ありがとうございました。園芸の生徒さん、小林美紀さん、関郁恵さん、宮澤智恵美さん。お三方と稲葉先生には、苗木の根と種枝を切る作業をして頂きました。約４００株。結構大胆に切ってもらいました。私はいじいじと、どうしても長めに残してしまいますが、根の長さはあれがベストでしょう。本田さんの友人の山浦さん。突然のお声掛けでしたが、ありがとうございました。BBQには参加されなかったんですね。福ちゃんの娘さんのひなちゃん。苗木を穴に入れていってくれました。簡単すぎて退屈だったかな、でもお友達もいたんだよね。

さて、写真はさるサクランボ畑の様子です。いつも「採り放題」をやらせてもらっている畑です。今年はたくさん実がなりそうで楽しみです。参加希望者の方ご連絡くださいね。

また、人形博物館では戸田澄江さんの人形展も始まりました。前庭にもディスプレイされていて、楽しい雰囲気です。目の前は私の巨峰畑です。

あ、そうそう次回のティトカフェでのワイン会は６月１６日で計画中です。今回は、楽しいワインが揃いそうですよ～。

It rained whole day yesterday. I was able to take some rest thanks to the rain. I spent very busy days after vine planting event by mowing grasses, making anchor wires, wiring in the vineyard and piling long mid posts, and so on. There are always something I have to do in the vineyars. Including the new vineyard, I have now 2 ha of vineyars consisting of 11 sites (5 for kyoho grape and 6 for wine grapes) which is a little bit too many. This year, the budburst started whith Semillon followed by Chardonnay. Other varieties need some more time but soon. At a glance of Chardonnay vineyards, my hope grows big. Surely I will have very good grapes this year and then wines, too!

Above pictures show the cherry orchard (sakuranbo) where we can pick as much fruit as we want. We can expect a lot more fruit this year than last year. Please let me know if you want to join us for such a generous event (fee is not fixed yet). And the 'kawaii' dolls by Ms.Sumiko Toda at the International Folk Doll Museum. One of my kyoho vineyards is just in front of it.
