今日の巨峰の畑の様子です。今は、摘粒前の準備として房落としをやっています。形のよい、大きすぎず小さすぎずの房を残して、残りは切り落としてしまいます。此の次に摘粒という、別名「粒抜き」という作業があるので、残したい房だけその摘粒作業をすればいいように房数を適正にする為の作業です。で、多分来週くらいから摘粒を始めることになりそうですが、早いお宅ではもう摘粒が始まっているようです。食べるのは黒い巨峰ですが、今の時期はこんなに緑なんですよ。

Today's Kyoho vineyard at NOBE. Kyoho grapes are black when they are eaten but at this time of the year they are still green. Bunch thinning is current operation. I have to drop bunches which are not in good shape, small or big, or seedles. As next operation is berry thinning, the number of the bunches needs to be ajusted so that I don't need do berry thinning at bunches more than necessary. I will start berry thinning next week but even today some vinerons seem to have started already!

それと、私のシャルドネ畑のクヌギの樹にいたカブト虫の写真です。昨年くらいから近くの小学生に知れ渡ってしまい、もう元気のいい子らが畑に出没し始めています。カブトやクワガタの安息の食事場所だったんですが、今は危険な場所になってしまいました。

I can find many beetles in the trees by my chardonnay vineyard. The photo shows the one I found just today. The place became very famous among the nearby elementary school kids and many kids come to pick beetles. It used to be a safe place for their food (sweet tree fluid?) but not any more.

今日のシャルドネの様子です。今、誘引と言って今年延びた新梢を垣根状に作った棚のワイヤの間に措いてゆく作業をしています。写真はコルドンワイヤという主枝を這わせるメインのワイヤの上下に新梢を分けているところです（写真ではっきりわかりませんが）。こういう誘引の方法をやっているのは日本では私1人かも。専門的にはスマート・ダイソンという方法です。葡萄の葉っぱが重ならないように誘引して、より光が枝や葉っぱ・房に当たり、更に風通しがよくなり、防除のために農薬が満遍なくかかるようにします。全ては、健全で高品質の葡萄を収穫するためです。光をより多く当てることで来年の芽が健全に形成されるので、来年の葡萄の品質にも大きく関係してきます。房も露出して、今年はより品質の高い葡萄が期待できそうです。

The picture shows the chardonnay vines of today. Now the new shoots are trained to the foliage wires. As shown, I apply so-called Smart-Dyson training and I may be the only one that applies this system. The new shoots are trained upwards and downwards at the same time so that shoots, leaves, and bunches can receive more light, better ventillation and sprays as well. All for the better quality grapes. As the buds for next year are produced in the new shoots now, sunlight can encourage the buds to grow healthier which influence nest year's harvest already. As the bunches are exposed so well this year, I would expect higher quality ones this year.

今日久しぶりに昼間の雨（梅雨だというのに）、で農作業はお休みです。たまっているその他の用事が少し片付きました。

ブログも久しぶりです。前回は6月3日ですから、3週間近くぶりになります。この間、超農繁期で、現在進行形です。簡単に何があったかだけを…。

It rained today whole day. It was only second or third time that it rained during day time in this rainy season! No work in the vineyards and I have done a few things among the stuck of must-do lists. It's first blog in the last three weeks, too. I have been so busy. Anyhow, June-July is the busiest periond of the year. Followings are some of the things that I have done during this period.

その１）房きりです。5.5反分の巨峰畑の房きりに10日間。但し、1枝に3つつく房のうち1房についてやっただけなので、現在残りの房を落としています。これに既に1週間かかっています。あと、3日はかかります。写真はその1場面。今年手伝ってくれたのは、ボーダーの春菜ちゃん、彩ちゃん、みっちゃん、去年に続いて本田さん、友人の栗田さん、親戚の山口さん夫妻、姉の塩入さん夫妻。写真はボーダーの3人です。

Bunch Cutting (or Bunch Trimming). It took us full ten days to do the 55a of my kyoho vineyards even though only one bunch per new shoot was trimmed. Now we are dropping the rest of the undone bunches. It took us already 5 days and it will take another three days at least. Those helped me for the bunch cutting are; Haruna chan, Aya-chan, Mitchan (they are snowboarders), Honda-san, her friend Kurita-san, Mr. and Mrs. Yamaguchi, my sisiter and her husband Shioiri-san. The young people in the picture are snowboarders.

その２）6月8日は酒米の田植えです。今年は某有名人が参加、最近長野県のマスコミに出演が増えている芸能人です（秘密のプロジェクトが進行中）。

On June 8, Wine Rice planting. One undisclosed famous TV personality joined the rice planting secretly. A secret project is going on in our rice paddy.

その３）6月9日は人形博物館で「クラフトとジャズとシードルの夕べ」が催されました。大雨の中、素適な音楽と美味しいシードルプラス巨峰ワインが好評でした。写真はその1コマです。京都や愛知、新潟方面からの参加者もいました。

The third "Jazz and Cidre Night with Craft" was held on June 9. despite of the heavy rain at the evening, the attendants enjoyed the good music, cidre and kyoho wines very much. Some crafts exhibitors joined the event from Kyoto, Nagoya, and Niigata totaling 39 persons/organizations.

その４）サクランボ狩り　今年で3回目になりました。市内のソリマチさんの畑で採り放題、持ち帰り放題をやりました。あちらこちらにおすそ分けして、大好評でした。今年は雨も少なく実割れもなく、樹上完熟サクランボがおいしかった～。

Cherry picking. Thanks to Mr.Sorimachi, the landlord of the cheryy orchard, we enjoyed third cherry picking event. The attendants paid around 2,000yen per person (1,000 yen per child) and picked as many cherries as they want. With little rain in last few days, cherries had no splitting and were in perfect ripe conditions which birds enjoyed very much as well.

その５）房きりが1段落したところで、今年植えたワイン畑の草刈りです。
Mowing grasses in the new vineyards. The young vines are fine. I have to spray against vine mildew.

その６）峰の原オープンペンションフェスタ
私は１、2件のペンションにお邪魔してお昼とコーヒーを頂きました。写真は高原の昼食（そうめんでした）にお呼ばれしたときのものです。下界は暑くてもやはり高原は寒かった。太陽の光が嬉しいお昼ですた。「春蝉」という蝉がかまびすしく鳴いていました。

Minenohara open pension festa. I visited a few pesions and joined the owner families' lunch and coffe. The "so-men" was fine and I found the noisy cicadas' singing. They are so called Spring Cicadas. It was warm in the city down under the mountains while it was rather a bit cold up there but the scenery and the flickering lights through the trees were so beautiful as alwayas.

その７）　第5回ティトカフェワイン会
今回は初めての方も含めて13人が参加。ワインは8種類でした。とっても盛り上がって好評でした。なんでもTSBのさる番組のレギュラーの方も参加者の中にいたようですヨ。写真は今回使ったワインの空瓶の1部です。

The 5th wine gothering was held at Tito Cafe. 13 gutest joined this time on June 16. It was very friendly ambient and everybody enjoyed it very much. After 8 bottles of wines we enjoyed cold beers, too which cooled down our drying throat after "hot" wines and chat. I am afraind that Kee-chan(maitress of the cafe) provided too much food which seemed to go beyond the budget. A regular cast of a TV Shinshu programme joined the event, too. We hope that she will make a great success in the TV world.

その８）ワイン葡萄も大きくなりました
写真は1週間ほど前のメルローの畑と花です。今年は大分畑も増えたので、今月に入って巨峰とあわせて、5日薬剤散布をしています。薬散の朝は3時台から4時起きです。全て健康で高品質の葡萄ができる為の大事な過程です。

Wine vines are fine and growing. New shoots are vigorous and it makes me expect a great harvest this autumn. Merlot vines and flowers are shown in the picture.

その９）本人近影　n-style の浅野さんのバイク（プジョー）を借りてひとっ走りしたときの写真です。キャップをかぶってサングラスをしたら、さて私は誰でしょう。浅野さんにお願いしてカフェの前で記念撮影でした。

Who is this guy? It's me, JPK! With cap and sunglasses, who can imagine it's me. Mmmmm, he is not bad, rather a good looking ... with no face showing. Bike is not mine. In front of N-style shop and Cafe. It's not a grapevine, it's just one of the latest snap shoot of me.

明日からいよいよ房きりを始めます。房きりって知ってます？巨峰を作るときに欠かせない作業なんです。開花前1週間から初めて満開後4日くらいに終わらせなければならない作業なので、此の時期雨が降っても葡萄畑の中にその作業をする人の車が何台も止まってますね。実は、此の作業トンでもない作業なんです。今年芽が出てそれが伸びた枝（新梢といいます）に1個から3個の花房（房の子供）がつきますが、その1個乃至2個について先っちょを少しつまみ、15段程度の粒の塊を残して、残りを全て掻き取るという作業です（下の図を見て下さい）。10アール当たり、大体2万個の花房があるのですが、それを全て手作業でやるのです。体勢は常に上向き（棚ですから）両手は肩より上です。で、立ちっ放し。毎年夜、足が痙攣して目が覚めます。そして、1日は夢に出てきます。お手伝いの方を何人かお願いしますが、やはり夢に見る人もいるそうです。巨峰栽培の大変さは、こうして房に手をかける細かい作業が2ヵ月（6月と7月）続くことです。

ところで、房きりの英語表記ですが、何がいいのかな～と考えてBunch cutting
としました。英語のBunch Thinningだと、bunchを落とす作業に使われる単語で、摘房になります。Beryy thinning だと摘粒になります。bunch forming だと概念が広がりすぎてしまいます。bunch cutting がちょうどいいかな～という感じですね。

どうすか、どなたか体験しにきませんか？これを経験した人は、例外なく「今まで漫然と巨峰を食べていたけど、一粒一粒に手がかかっているんだな～と思い出されて、無駄にしなくなった」とおっしゃいます。

The time has come for ''husakiri'' or bunch cutting of kyoho grape. This operation is crucial to form a bunch and make good looking bunches.You have to cut the tip of the baby bunch and remove the rachis by leaving around 15 rachis on each bunch. You have to do this on acutually each bunch of which total becomes around 20,000 per 10a of kyoho vineyard. In my case, I have around 55a of kyoho vineyards which make you almost faint only by thinking doing by yourself. Of course I have helpers but sometimes I get up in the middle of the night by a crumpled legs due to the fatigue and also it comes into my dream. Some helpers says that they also have dream of bunch cuttings. You can see how the operation is done in the picture. Anybody who wants to experience such operation is always welcome. This bunch cutting should be done within the period of around 14days which is including flowering. So no matter what the weather is, you have to finish it in this very limited period. This time of the year, you can find many cars parking by the vineyards because so many helpers are needed. Anybody who did this operation told me that they would never waste kyoho grapes by remembering such a hard work that they had done.

４月２８日の苗植え会後、大分草も生えましたが中柱を打ち込み、ワイヤーをかけて固定して、大分畑らしくなってきました。市内大谷町ですので、苗植え会に参加した方々たまには様子を見に来て下さい。畑から見る山も緑がまぶしくて美しい風景ですよ。そして、今年植えた葡萄の苗木も元気に育っています。一部最近の低温にあってしなっとしているのもありますが、霜にやられたわけではないので大丈夫でしょう。写真はリースリングです。リースリングとヴィオニエは植え替えをしたので、もう既に房の子供をつけています。写真でも小さいのが少し写っていますが分かりますか？カナダに行った伊藤美穂さんとジョンさんもこのブログを見ているらしいですが、此の畑は伊藤さん夫妻の実家の直ぐ側ですので、これからは町の様子ものせて行きますね。

そうそう、シャルドネが瓶熟して大分よくなってきました。自分でも、これがファーストビンテージとは思えないほどの出来だと思えるようになって来ました。リリースは夏を越えてからにしようと思っていましたが、もう何時リリースしても大丈夫かも。ラベルを作らなくっちゃ。

It's been almost one month since vine planting event on April 28. The young vines are fine and the vineyard is becoming more and more a real vineyard after installation of mid posts and wires. The mountain behind is brilliantly shining with young green colors. What a beautiful sight! Some of young vines seem to be damaged by recent low temperature and they look a bit weak, however, they should be OK as the damage was not so severe as frost. Riesling and Viognier planted in this vineyard are replanting ones and are two years old. So some of them have baby bunches already. In the second picture, you can see the baby Riesling. Mrs. Miho Ito Ward and her husband Jon Ward who had helped me in the vineyards for two years and flew to Canada to settle down there used to live just behind this vineyard. I will show some of the neighbour's pictures from time to time for them.

Oh, by the way, my Chardonnay wine is getting better after maturation in bottle. I meant to release it after summer but it should be ready now. I have to make nice label and prepare for it. The quality is more than expected for the first vintage wine. I hope every body will like it.
