It snowed in Nagano and Suzaka
yesterday but we can see the
snow in down town only today.
Morning sun melted it very
quickly though. It seems that
we had first snowfall earlier
this year than last year and
I feel it gets colder everyday.
The sorrounding mountains
has deepened their colour very
quickly in last few days. The apple
leaves look much yellower for this time
of the year. Kyoho vines dropped most
of their leaves. We are in the winter
now.
Today it is the third Thrusday
of November which is the release
of Beaujolais Nouveau. As usual
I attended the wine meeting organized
by Urano bottle shop. They served
Beaujolais Village Nouveau which is
considered better than Beaujolais
Nouveau and indeed it was better.
It has the noze of bouquet and
very rich but somehow moderate and
the palate is thicker but mild.
It will be my turn to arrange the wine
on the day after tomorrow. The wine session
will be held at the prestigeous Japanese
restaurant in Suzaka.
Last week, I was inveted
for a dinner with which
we tried wild pig meat
and I went with my wines.
I was not sure how the meat
was served or if the meat
was the one of hybrid of
wild pig and pig or pork
meat. In any caes, I took
my Merlot and Chardonnay 2007.
The dinner was a hot pot
of pork meat and vegetables
and BBQ of wild pig. To my
surprise, Chardonnay went
very well with most of the food
much better than Merlot.
Even though I found the condition
of Chardonnay 2007 was just so so
because it was still under improving
process in the bottle, every body
at the table which was around 10
liked Chardonnnay very much and
emptied two bottles very quickly.
I had been anxious about
the wine beacuse of its
unique character but was
relieved a bit to find out
there were still many
people to like it.
Along with the maturation,
the wine is changing and
the quality is improving.
I really look forward to enjoying
it after a while.
Continued Umaimon-Matsuri festival.

The event introduced here the other
day was mainly those at the parking
area. At the same time, there held
a cooking session and lecture by
Food couselor Ms. Takako Yokoyama
at the Health Centre building.
People from Minenohara and the students
from Suzaka High School of Commerce and
Suzaka High School of Horticulture helped
the cooking. Some sample dishes were
brought in from Minenohara, too.
Cooking session was on the
daily food made of the local
ingredients and the lecture
was on the food and health.
According to the participants,
at the very interesting and
exciting contents, they were
made to notice what was the
good family food.
It seems that the pension owers
at Minenohara Kogen high lands
had invited her for cooking
instructions. Let us go to Minenohara
for food. Such event can be
interesting.

It was the last live performance by
Mizukure Tobanz yesterday at Umaimon-matusuri
festival. Last, but for the moment, I wish.
The famous song "Dodogawa-bashi Bridge" of which
melody has been played as a time signal through
emergency speaker throughout the city everyday
was the last number and was played in collaboration
with Kurano-Mori duo and Toshi chan, a famous singer
for his Nagano Purple grape song.
We are very grateful for their encouragement
by their music to the people live in Suzaka.
I wish they will come back at Umaimon-matsuri
festival next year.
Regarding the band name, Mizukure-Toabanz means
by local dialect "(a pupil) in charge
of watering (to the flowers, etc)" but not
"my turn to call for water" if taken in terms
of Kanto area dialect.
At school, each pupil is in charge of feeding
rabbits or fish, watering flowers or veges, or
serving lunch, etc. So their name means
the band in charge of watering. To what have they
watered ? It's been the people in Suzaka.
They have poured love and encouragement to the
people there.
In summer, when the Dodogawa-bashi Bridge became
popular as the time signal, local TV station
featured the song and the band but there they
introduced the name wrongly. They mentioned
it meant "give me water" band. The professional
speakers should study pay much more attention
to the local languages. We have many dialect in
Shinshu!
Another example, they have a song called
"Settaka-sewaneka-settemi-sewareta".
Can you geuss what it means? It means
"I was questioned and was told to tell (him/her)
if he/she had told (a thing) or had not told (to me)."
The meaning is very clear to us, natives.
Don't they seem like Enya singign in Gaelic now?
Very full, No exaggeration, Mottainai!

Today Umaimon Matsuri, a field day in Suzaka
was held at the city hall park. The weather was
not perfect but the event was full of so many things
that those who missed it should regret so much.
Mottaina-i!
People there must have enjoyed it surely.
To point out a few;
from the left towards the stage,
Eco Support Suzaka showed how to make
house garbage to fertilizers at home.
Kumasugi, high schook students'
sales group, sold processed food
including local traditional vegetable
pickles and grape juice.
Eco Life Network sold such rare 100%
local rape seed oil. They grew the vegetables
on the abandaned agricultural land which they had
developed.
So good and so reasonaly price cookies
were sold by Suzaka Gijutu Gakuen. The
quality will be inproving next year.
Local Agriculture Committiee members made
sticky rice cakes served with a few kind of
bean powders. Such sticky rice cake making
is just a rare sight even in Suzaka.
Fureai Tokuichi, a farmers' group sold
their hand grown fruits, beans, and vegetables.
On the right side towards the stage,
My-chopsticks making was carried out and
was popular among the families. Own chopsticks
were used for tasting many food provided.
Local restaurants sold sample
new rice bowl dishes usig miso paste
and local veges, called Miso-suki bowl.
Sold out!
Breads made of rice flower were served
by local bakery.
Hand made Oyaki, a local traditional
slow and heart food, using local veges were sold
by Sonosato group.
Some other free foods were served such as
duck soup (ducks were grown in the rice paddie
which did not use chemicals), local leek cake of which
ingredients were all from Suzaka (flour, leek, burduck,
carrot, water, handmade miso paste), Hin-nobe (Japanese

meat BBQ, etc.
Yakon veges and Yakon juice.
Locally grown veges, rice and other

School.'
Re-useable dishes and chopsticks were
rented out at the reception.
In the center areas towards the stage,
maffins and other boulangers were sold
by people from Minenohara highland area.
Fire fighting Department exhibited an
emergency air tent. The urgent treatment
and how to use AED equipment were introduce
inside the tent. It's good to know how to
do in case of emergency.
On the center stage, the famous
Mizukure Tobanz live were performed
together with Kura-no-Mori and Toshi-and-
Yurin duos. Many songs to encourage Suzaka and
many famous and a few new songs were sung.
The audiences were very much excited.
As a matter of fact, it was the last live
for Mizukure Tobanz, what a pity!
In the Civil Health Center just across the street,
famous food counselor Takako Yokoyama who had itroduce
local food of Shinshu made cooking session for the mothers
by using local food and made a lecture. Vegetable sommelier
was MC. Original foods made by citizens using local
fruit were exhibited, too. Later, rice ball makig session for
parents and children was held there.
It was really an event of full of everything.
Women power was exhibitted very clearly to have made
it happen. There were some male participants but
the women did everythin including bringing in the
materials, cooking, sales and clean-up as if
they had been just an ordinary thing or an routine
house hold affair.
The efforts of those who were involved in such
a wondeful event are highly appreciated.
Thank you for all the participants of the event
with regard to the agriculture, food, ecology,
music and the supporters for all. Thank you for
the joining the event together. Especially, your
smiles made eveybody happy and encouraged.
