All the media should be very busy
about this issue today. I downloaded
the official copy and watched the
Address via internet.
It was not easy to follow what he
had said but I read the Address with
a dictionary.
He seems to say that America should
challenge this crisis and would never
give in so had their ancestors done to
make America and that they should
do so with the spirit of their
own hard earned start. He seems
to stress to remember the principle or
the very base of America. Of course
energy shift and diplomatic indication
were referred to.
What impressed me most is that
Americans have very strong principle
that can be always remembered at
the time of crisis and encourage
the people to overcome. It has come
to be referred to at the time of
Civil War, Civil Rights Movement,
etc.
The Declaration of Indepence.
The spirit of the Declaration that
had been formed at the huge sacrifice
and the risk of lives should stand as the
principle of the people very clearly.
Then, what about Japan? What is the principle
of the Japanese that we can rely on when
we are at the crisis? There used to be
one that had been taught through education
but it was not actually. There is nothing
similar to the Declaration among the Japanese
which can encourage us and which the people can
rely on that had been earned through common
experience of the people.
There is one that we have gained at the
huge sacrifice but ...
As what Japan has been is different from
what other countries have been, so it may
not be necessary to define such thing. Or
we should look for something that the
Japanese have grown and nourish through
our history. That we have taken very
important as our identity having
universal and etnernal value.
In Tokyo, I stayed by the famous
Sensouji Temple.
There were so many people came to
watch and pray at the temple.
I noticed many people even took
pictures of the mass of people
including myself. The stream of
people in the Nakamise street
from Kaminarimon Gate to the
temple flooded over to all the
narrow streets behind the main
Nakamise street.
With Japanese and English conversation
coming to my ears, Chinese conversation
was outstanding.
There was a wide vacant area on the
right hand side of the temple and where
the Nakamise shops just end. Many hawker
vendors are selling many kinds of handy
lunches and snakcks and people were eating
their own favorites. Monkey show was going
on and attracted many people, too.
There I found a hawker stand with
the sign of Oyaki and Shinshu Taste.
Since long time ago, I had thought that
the Oyaki should be popular in Tokyo if
I had sold them with a mobile shop.
Actually many mobile lunch vendors had
gathered in the business districts in
Tokyo at lunch time. Therefore, when I
found this stall, I thought it had come
all the way.
When I came closer to the Oyaki,
I found them a bit different from
ours. They looked a bit yellowish
and flatter. There were only two kinds
of Oyaki sold which was very unusual
compared to our normal vendors having ten
kinds very easily. Here were popular Nozawana
and puruple sweet potate! I have never
encountered purple sweet potate Oyaki
around here. The vendor was heating
Oyaki on the BBQ plate spread with oil.
One piece cost 200 yen.
I did not talk to the vendor nor buy his
Oyaki, I felt a bit cheeful but also
embarrassment. Even if that Oyaki was
just look a like, it means our Oyaki
become a first class as it was imitate.
In any case, Oyaki has become well known
now. It must have been recognized as the
Japanese tasty soul food.
It reminded me of the time when
the wiring for the streetcars covered
the sky at around Yotsuya, Tokyo.
At such time, my family went to Tokyo
holding tens of Oyaki as souvenir from Shinshu to
the relatives there. Befoer same amount
of time would have passed from now, Oyaki
would become a national food for
Japanese. I am so sure and no doubt about
it!
A senior member of the Univesrity
swimming club passed away and I
went to Tokyo to attend his
farewell service. Recently
more people tend to attend
a wake ceremony rather than
the farewell service, so
did I.
He was very different person.
Some said he has been unprecedented.
He was very funny in a sense.
He had hard on the junior members
including me and imposed hard
trainings in the pool but he
had charming character and
many senior and juior members
had associated with him frinedlily.
He had been graduated from the
faculty of laws but he had found him
more suitable in dedicine and the
management of hospital. Afer he
had became a doctor at the age of 40,
he was successful and he became the
chairman of a hospital with around
50 staff working.
It was a big and great wake service at
a very famous temple in Tokyo. Around 20
old members of the uninversity swimming
club gathered from the distance. As we had
had only 3 to 5 members each year, 20 is
not a small number. One said that
he must have said, "All you should come while
I was alive if you came in such a number
for my service." That is right, too late.
After the light meal ceremony which turned
to be an OB gathering, we went to the coffin
and took final farewell. When I saw his face
which was almos same as one that I had seen
two year earlier, I was almost moved to tears.
Everybody seemed to have same feeling.
He was only 58 years old. We all prayed for the
repose of his soul. We all wish you will
be in a peaceful rest.
Thank you and good bye.
It recorded the coldesd temperature
of this winter yesterday morning.
The temperature indicator of the
fan heater in my room showed 1degreeC.
The water in the kitchen was freezed
and did not run at all. The tube got
through only in the afernoon when it
got warmer and because of hot water
poured on it.
The worry of the low temperature
for the vines is the cold injury.
Once the temprature got under 13 degrees
C below zero, the vines could die.
In such a cold day's evening
a wine session was held. It was
intended to encourage me and
about 10 wine lovers (drinking
lovers) including young ladies
gathered for the feast.
As the first trial, I prepared
only my own wines (made of own
grown grapes), 3 whites, 4 reds
and 1 desert wines.
I should say the wines were
good. Because of the vine
age and the maturation period,
I have to admit that the wines
need more time in the bottle to
attain more varetal characteristics
and concentration to be fair.
Each people liked different wine
which was always interesting.
In any case, many thanks to the
participants and to the Japanese pub
which offered the place and dishes
for such occasion. The wines must
be better in summer.
Heavy snow falls are reported from
Hokkaido to Kyushu. Here in Suzaka
we must have a 'mid winter day' today as
the max temperature was below zero
by noon.
In the vineyard, the snow looks like
as if it was melting but the wind was
cold and the foot in the snow gets
cold soon. We should avoid hard work
on such a day.
Yesterday I had white wine
blending test for a
blending possibility.
Blending is not the same
as mere mixing. If the wine
quality improved once mixed than
original wines, we can then call
it blending. Individual wine should
complement each other in the blended
wine.The possibility is under
consideration now.
