While removing tendrils from the wires
in the Merlot vineyard, I happened to find
many incsetc and shot them. I am not
so sure if the names are right or not.

I had no choice
but to kill the caterpillars as they would
cause damage to the vines.
A mimic insects watcher was pleased
to find biodiversity in his vineyard.

I will take care of vines this year
much more than before in order to
have better harvest.

I got rats damage on my vines and
about ten vines were dead this Spring.
The trunk was biten underground and it
looked like a spear.

According to other farmers, their
apple young trees were damaged badly.
One said only three out of 15 trees were
left after rats damage. I often hear the
rats damage sice three years ago.

Speaking of rats damage, our vege farm
which used to be a rice paddie was covered
with water. The water came from the upper rice
paddie at the time of watering into the paddie
and the water leaked through rats holes made in
the mad partition of the paddies.

It would become a big problem sooner or
later. More people will abondan the farm
land due to the serious rats damages.
Our vege growing group has started talkig
about returing the farm to the owner and
looking for another place. It is a pity
if we should do so as the current farm
land was once abandande rice paddie and
recovered by the efforts of many people.

Last week in Tokyo, I woke up
at around 4:30am because it
got so bright in the hotel
room where I had forgot to close
the room curtain the night before.
I really did not remember how
early the dawn was in Tokyo.
In Nagano at this time, it gets
bright at the mountain ridge
at five in the morning.

I went to the friend's cherry
orchard at 5:30 this morning to
cover up the orchard with the
vinyl sheet to avoid rain.
Cherry growers and other friends
joined in hands to help out
each other. One cannot just
do it by oneself.

As a matter of fact, there are many
cherry growers in Suzaka which is not
well known though just like other fruit
produces. This covering or roofing is needed to
protect the fruit from the rain
otherwise the cherry
will break at the harvest time if it
rained. There are some who do not
cover but just leave it to the fate.

We were invited for breakfast after the
operation and chatted about unusual weather,
frost damage, the shortage of bees, etc.
All these issues influence the fruit set
and the growth of the fruit trees.
It is a big problem for everybody this year.

It was rainy today and cold in Suzaka.
I drove to Minenohara Kogen Heights
to attend the lecture about Organic Garden.
It was colder there at the atlitude of
1500m and we needed a heater.

Organic Garden sounds quite new to me
but I did not mean to start gardening
at home. I thought it would be of some
help when I would think about organic
agriculture for grapes. I wondered what
the basic way of thinking about the
pests and disease was.

The lecturers were Mr. and Mrs. Hikichi
of Japan Organic Garden Association from
Hannoh, Saitama. Their talk was very clear
and very much interesting and the attendants
some of whom came from Tokyo, IIduna, etc.,
were invited into the talks very naturally
and impressed very much.

In short, Organic Gardening is to make
a garden of biologically diversified where
the food chain is well balanced. Even any
pest has raison-d'etre as long as it is there.
If we wished to remove it by agricultural
chemicals for example, it would break the
ecological balance already existing which
would consequently harm the environment.
So, we should do instead to try to maintain
a sustainable biological diversity. Such basic
thinking of gardening was explained in simple
words and in humble atomoshpere.

Regarding the disease, we should grow the
adequate plants there on the healthy ground
which is well diversified one. We do not need
to bring starnger plants where they cannot
grow naturally. That is true but it is not
always the case for us farmers, I think.
But even so, eventually that is very true and
we do not need grow plants which need special
treatment (like agricultural chemicals) to
cure them.

It's still chilly in Nagano
since 13th of this week while it was warm
in Tokyo. The new shoots of Kyoho grapes
grow very slowly. Even not all the buds
have budburst yet. I usually have Kotatsu
heater up until around Golden Week but I
still have it in my room this year.

I planted sweet potato and tomate today.
I will plant cassis next week. I prepared
the yard for it yesterday.
