The last scheduled visit of second day
was Wolf Brass, one of the biggest wine
making factor in Barossa Valley.
There are many building size huge
fermenters. They make wines of around
2 million cases per year.
Most of its wines can be obtained in Japan
but visiting such a factory was a rare opportunity.
Visitors can taste most of the ranges including
Black Label and Platinum Label wine for mere three
dollars while we have to pay around $50 for the
similar tasting at the National Wine Centre in
Adelaide.
Some people do not like the wines from the
big companies like Wolf Brass by saying
that the mass production lacks character but
in fact their wines are better than expected.
Dr. Hayasaka joining our tour for the day
shared the idea and actually bought a bottle
of wine there. I got two bottles of Black Label
for future wine tasting in Japan.
In the vineyard today, I have finished unwarpping
the anti cold band thanks to frined's and his wife's
hands. I also finished warpping the cane.
Next is chardonnay from tomorrow.
Now, second winery on the second day of the
winery tour:
Leaving Henschke, we arrived at Jacob's Creek
Visitor Center for tasting and lunch.
Each member tasted his/her own favorite wines.
We picked light lunch for the heavier dinner
later.
Jacob's Creek has such top brand wines as
Jacaranda Ridge or Sentenary Hill but they are
not available for tasting. But after chatting
about wines over tasting, he left into office
and turned up with a bottle of Jakaranda Ridge.
It happens often in Australia. Once they recognize
us as in wine industry, they become friendlier and
let us taste the wines that are not supposed to
for tasting. He was so kind and offered 10% discount
for our purchase as we utilized the restaurant.
Jakaranda is the name of the tree that has very beautiful
blue flowers in Spring.
We had drizzling rain in the
morning just enough to get wet
and cold wind in the afternoon.
I continued to remove anti cold
band and to wrap the canes around
the wire.
Winery tour 2nd day.
To the Barossa Valley.
Not so many people may visit
all the way to Henschke even though
one might visit Barossa Valley.
It is situated almost in the Eden Valley
and is the very first winery in the region
in 1800s. Its reputed Hill of Grace is second
only to Grange. Thanks to the long journey from
Adelaide, we tasted many of its wines including
Hill of Grace and Hill of Roses. These two
wines had been already decanted. Special care is
taken not to extract too much tannin during
fermentation so its wines were softer comparing
so called Barossa style. White wines made of
local grapes are outstaning, too with clear and
crisp taste thanks to high acidity. The aroma and
flavour are in good uniformity.
The entrance to the cellar door and office.
Pinot Noir is under fermentation in the
tank in the simple cellar.
Other reds are fermented still in the
concrete fermenter. After fermentation,
the wines are sent to the tanks in the basement
by gravity. Very gentl wine handling.
In this vineyard, I almost
finished pruning before wrapping the
anti cold injury band so now I only
unwrap the band and wrap the canes
around the wire, rather simple operation.
However, unwrapping and rolling the
band took more time than expected.
Warm weather was helping such operation.
The winery tour in South Australia:
On the first day when I joined the winery tour
members from Japan, we went out for dinner
at Universal Wine Bar at Randle Street in
down town Adelaide. As our booking time was
rather early, all the dishes came at once
which was a bit embarassing and the pizza
was cold which ofcourse we requested to
heat again.
However, they had good choice of wine list.
We ordered Pinot Noir rose sparkling wine
from Bird In Hand which was very followed
by Koogyong (from Victoria) Chardonnay
which we liked very much,too.
Sparkiling wine is good for a summer
night (it was actually autumn there but
the temperature was over 30C degrees
everyday).
Due to unexpected rain, I worked at the
desk in the morning. I went to the vineyard
in the afternoon and finished most of cutting
part of pruning. Then I will start the pulling
and wrapping part tomorrow after removing
the cold protecction.
The buds are getting bigger and make me serious
or feel hastening.
Memories of winery tour:
At The Lane Vineyard at Adelaide Hills
which has become popular after its opening
in 2003. At the end of pebbles road, the
cellar door cum restaurant has stunning view
of the vineyards.
There are Shaw & Smith and Nepenthe's cellar
doors nearby which is within 5 minutes drive
from the town of Harndolf.
