草刈り。7月に撮影。楠ヴィニヤーズでは株間と畝間に除草剤を使っていません。で、このように乗用の草刈機で草刈りをやります。草の有機質を畑にもどしてやるのです。
Weed control by mower. I don't use herbicides under vines and between vine rows　here. The weeds are then returned to the earth as natural fertilizer. I have to wear rainwear after rain or in the morning in the vineyards.

ワイン会。8月18日にティカフェで第6回目のワイン会です。12名参加。8種類8本のワインを出しました。フロンティニャックのスパークリング（やや甘口）と西オーストラリアのシラーズが人気の様でした。皆さんヴィオニエとかはどうだったんでしょうかね～？　追加であけたセミヨンがかなりふくよかで、思いのほかよかったですね。今回はインポーターの小出さんと、ホームページを見たという上野さんが長野から参加してくれました。いつも美男の参加者がいるというのでちょっと評判？

6TH wine session at Tito Cafe was held on August 18 with 12 participants. We again enjoyed good wines and good foods very much. Many of them liked Frongtinac Sparkling and Australian Shiraz. Ms.Koide, a wine importer and a friends of mine joined from Kyoto and Ms.Ueno from Nagano who found my homepage enjoyed a Suzaka night very much.

今日の巨峰です。今年は、7月は例年の55%という日照不足。8月はあまり温度が下がらない日続きで、なかなか巨峰も色づきが遅れています。それでも、収量制限しているせいか、ご覧のような具合です。畑は甘い香りが一杯でした。ちらほらと今年も送って欲しいという連絡がきはじめました。荷造りをする作業所を見つけなければ！　これが新規就農者の頭痛のひとつです。

Today's Kyoho grape at one of the Kyoho vineyards. We had only 55% of sunshine hours this July and the heat in August did not lower the temperature good enough for the grapes to become darker. But my grapes so far look OK. The harvest and shipping will start in September. Sounding about the grape condition are coming from royal customers and my friends. I have to find a place to do packing, which always troubles me and is a headache for a new farmer.

最近のメルロー。メルローも色づいてきました。ピノはそろそろ真っ黒な房が散見されます。房落としそどの程度やるかが悩みどころです。

Merlot looks very good. But by considering the weather condition, I am wondering if I have to drop some bunches to achieve higher quality at the time of harvest. If the weather was good throughout mid October, I need not to do so but the decision is something like a betting.

去る8月11日、峰の原高原で星を観る会が開かれました。私は去年に続いて2回目の参加です。約5倍の望遠鏡作りにもチャレンジしました（写真）。普段星を観る事はまずありません。年に1回のイベントです。会の方々の説明で、夏の大3角形とか、星座のこととかを説明してもらって、2年目にしてようやく少し覚えました。ベガ、アルタイル、デネブでしたよね～。さそり座や白鳥座も分かったし北極星の見つけ方とか。会の皆さんの望遠鏡で、木星を見て4個の衛星と木星の縞模様も見れました。ペルセウス座のものなのかどうか分かりませんが、流星も５個くらい見ましたし、猛スピードで移動する人工衛星も見れました。峰の原は夜半袖では寒いくらいの気温で、下とは別世界でした。

M13 球状星雲はたくさんの粒々が見えました。Mは18世紀の天文学者のメシエからきているそうです。

On August 11, I joined the star watching gothering at Minenohara Kogen highland. It was my second attendance following last year's one. I began to learn a bit about the summer stars. I mada a simple magnifier, too. Thanks to the kind staff of the gothering, now I remember The Summer Triangle consisting of Vega, Artile, Denebu. I also learned how to find the Polestar. Swan and Scorpion constellation still remain with me. Too little time to make a wish on even five shooting stars. Manmade satelite moves at high speed in the night sky. It's an once in a year event for me. Watching stars at Minenohara Kogen is always a fresh and enjoyable event.

Through a big telescope, I found four Jupitar's satelites and the stripes on the Jupitar,too. M13 nebular stars can be seen like scattered granules. M stands for a French astronomer's name Messier (?).

昨日（8月5日）は大忙しでした。朝5時集合で蕎麦の種まきです。数件の農家が趣味で蕎麦をつくってます。去年の蕎麦うち会の様子は既にブログで紹介しましたが、今年は場所を変えて、やはり休耕農地で蕎麦つくりです。畑は耕運機で起こしてありますが、雑草が根付かないように草を取り除きながらの作業なので思いのほか時間がかかりました。10人くらいで8時までやって20アール弱の畑の種まきの終了です。朝からうんざりするほど暑くて、汗だくでした。周りのりんごとモモの畑では薬剤散布が始まるし、写真をとっている余裕がありませんでした。

It was very busy whole day yesterday. Buckwheat seeding at 5am together with other farmers.It was very warm even at early time in the morning and everybody was sweating. It took around 10 of us three hours to finish plant seeds. The work was a bit harder than expected as we had to remove weeds as they would root even after cultivation by tractor. I forget to take photos as everybody was busy and the people in the neighboring orchards started spraying by machine for the apples and peaches.

午前中は猛暑の中お昼までワイン葡萄畑の草刈です。猛烈に雑草が成長していて、思ったようには進みません。結局3日に分けてようやく終了です。

After that, I mowed the weeds with the mower(shoulder held type)at the wine vineyards until noon. It was really tiring because of the heat and humidity, and the weeds were very long after a while.

お昼過ぎからは、豊野町の夏祭りのイベントである「ゆかた美コンテスト」参加です。といっても私が女装して出たわけではありません。畑仕事のお手伝いをして頂いている、本田さんが知り合いから「出てくれ」と頼まれたのを、同じくお手伝いをお願いしているボーダーの春菜ちゃんに振って、春菜ちゃんが出ることになったのです。狙うは優勝と優勝賞金10万円です。本田さんの浴衣を借りて出場することになり、畑で真っ黒になっていた春菜ちゃんですが、髪を上げて浴衣を着ればしっとりとした日本女性です。

In the afternoon, I went to join the summer festival at Toyono Machi about 20km from Suzaka. There held a "Yukata Beauty Contest" as the main event. Honda-san who helps me in the vineyard since last year was asked by a friend to participate in the kimono event and she passed the mission to Haruna-chan who also works in my vineyards this year. She got serious and we all aimed to win the contest and get the prize of 100,000 yen! With the hair set up and the borrowed Yukata from Honda-san, Haruna-chan,though dark now after farming in my vineyards, became a charming lady. Honda-san was very sure that she would win!

参加者は思いのほか多く30人、須坂や飯綱町、長野市からの参加もありました。1次予選で6人に絞られましたが、さすが本田さんの見立てどおり予選は通過（多分楽々）。強敵は豊野町の二人です。結果は優勝、準優勝とも豊野町の女性が取り、春名ちゃんは番外でしたが、「3番（春名ちゃんの番号）が一番だね~」の声が観客席のおばちゃんたちからも上がっていて、少々腑に落ちない結果でした。が、準優勝の結果発表のあと、優勝者が発表される間は、当然優勝と思いながらもどきどきしてとっても楽しい一時でした。

Thirty participants joined from Toyono machi, Nagano City, Iizuna Machi, and even from Suzaka City, too. At the preliminary selection left only 6 ladies including Haruna-chan. By this time, we were pretty sure that Haruna-chan would win, especially after the first runner-up was called. However, the first prize went to a housewife with three kids who lives in Toyono machi as well as first-runner up who was from Toyono machi and working in Tokyo. Maybe Toyono machi connection worked among the judges to lead the homeside decision as we heard from the audience that the first prize should have gone to No.3 (Haruna-chan's number).Anyhow, we enjyoed the event very much. Honda-san was very excited to see the unspoken battle among the lady contestants.

豊野町から帰ってからは、Tito Cafeとn-style でのジャズライブです。これまた畑の手伝いをしてくれている斎藤君の知りあいの大阪のジャズメンのトリオの演奏です。お客さんが集まるだろうかという斎藤君の心配は無用でした。50人以上が参加してライブは大盛り上がりです。とっても須坂っぽくなくて、おしゃれで、とっても自然で（生後4ヶ月の幼児や小学生からお年を召した方まで来場）、ワインや飲み物片手に、いい時間が流れました。また是非に、という声が多く聞かれました。トリオ・ザ・キゾクの面々も若々しく、まじめに熱く演奏してくれて、とってもいい感じでしたね～。

At night, I attended the jazz live held at Tito Cafe/n-style. The players are the friends of Mitchan who works in my vineyards this year. Michan worried very much about the number of attendance. However no need to worry. Over fifty people came to join the jazz live and all enjoyed very much. The atomosphere was so nice and those who joined from Suzaka felt that it was not like in Suzaka. Many people said they'd like to have such event more often. The jazz men seemed fresh, honest and very hot at the music. Thank you for all the wondeful performance.

7月は雨が多く葡萄の生育が遅れていました。普通は20日頃にとび玉が出るのに今年はようやく27日に見つけました。一昨日ころから温度が上がった為昨日はいくつも見つけました。

知っていましたか？葡萄の色って、最初は粒毎にでるのです。全体にボーっと色がついてくるのではなくて、一粒また一粒と色が出てくるのです。で、その後色が濃くなってゆくのです。

今年は色が着くのか、真っ黒になるのか心配されています。雨や曇りが多く日照時間が少ないのです。去年も実は7月は日照時間が少なかったのですが、8月はほとんど雨が降らずにほぼ日照り状態だったので結果的にいいぶどうが取れました。でも、今年はどうなのか？　私はかなり心配しています。で、思い切ってかなり葡萄を落としました。去年も収量制限して巨峰は全部で13000房でした。今年は更に収量制限して12000房を切っています。通常私の栽培面積では22000房が標準です。ですから、私の場合は他の人の半分程度しか着けていないことになります。少々品質が劣っても、たくさん作ったほうが収入はいいのですが、やはり自分の満足できる葡萄でないと売りたくないのでこんなことになっています。　収量制限が奏効して美味しい葡萄ができるといいんですが。

実物の色はもっといいんですよ。その美しさにはいつも感動します。
The real colour of berries with colour change is more beautiful than those in these photos.

The growth of Kyoho grapes are delayed this year because the weather was not good with a lot of rainy and cloudy days in July. Usually I can find the start of veraison (berry colour change) on around July 20 but I only found one on July 27. Since then, with good weather, the colour change has been found on many bunches.

Did you know the berry colour change occurs only on each berry? It does not happen on a whole bunch as you can see in these photographs.

I have around only 12000 bunches or less this year comaparing with 13000 last year. For the size of my Kyoho vineyards, one can have around 22000 bunches on average. So I dropped so many bunches in order to have good quality grapes. By reducing the number of bunches for a ceratin size of vineyard, we can have matured good bunches even in the bad year as this. I hope we can have a better weather in August but who knows?
