葡萄の幹からでる
新梢のことをサッカーと言います。
今の時期、ワイン葡萄の畑では
このサッカーを取り除く作業が
行われます。このことをデサッカー
と言います。

今の時期だと、簡単にとれるのですが、
新梢がしっかりしてくると
とても取りづらくなります。

幹には一見芽が無いように見えますが、
多くの芽（大抵副芽ですが）が潜んでいて、
その芽より上にある芽の数が樹勢に対して
少ないと、この潜んでいる芽が出るのです。
ですから、樹勢が落ち着いた成木になると
出にくいのですが、若い樹だと沢山出ます。

そのままにしておくと、エネルギーの無駄遣いと
作業上の支障になるので、今のうちに
とってしまう必要があるのです。

せいぜい数ヘクタールの葡萄畑なら
そいたいした作業ではありませんが、
数十ヘクタールや百ヘタールの規模に
なるといちいちかかがまなければならない
ので、つらい作業です。機械化された
オーストラリアの葡萄畑で手作業に頼らざるを
得ない一番つらい作業かも知れません。
イチゴ摘みと同じくらいの重労働です。

下の写真は今日耕運した沼目白瓜を
植える畑です。

New shoots coming from trunk is called
suker. It is the time to remove suckers
in the winegrape vineyards.

It is easy to remove at this time of
the year but once new shoots get
hardened, it will be very difficult
operation.

Although trunk does not seem to carry
buds, there are many buds hiding (most
of the case, they are secondary buds).
In case bud number above these hidden
buds is small or that vine vigour is
stronger compared with the buds left
after pruning, then these sleeping
buds will burst. Matured vines do
not have many sukers but young and
vigours vines usually have more
suckers.

If these sukers were left undone, it will
the diversion of vine energy and they
disturbe other operations. Therefore they
need to be removed.

This is not a difficult task for the are
of a few ha but if you imagined that you
should do it for tens or or hundreds of
hectars, it is really a tough work because
you should squat for each vine.

In Australia where many vineyard operations
are mechanidized, this manual opertaion may
be the most difficult one. It is more like
strawberry picking.

The photograph below shows the small farm
yard for Numame Shirouri, local vegetable
melon where I plughed today.

ここら辺では農薬散布のことを
昔から消毒とよんでいる。
私が小学生の頃は、田んぼやら
りんご畑やらに、早朝ヘリコプター
で農薬散布が行われていた。

今はもうそんな事は無くなったが
昔は日本中どこでもそうだった。

航空機リースの前に中古のヘリコプター
を海外に売却する仕事をしていたことがある。
個人のオーナーもいたが、農薬散布に使われたヘリ
が、かつて薬散を収入源にしていたオペレーターから
売りに出されるのだ。KH4とかBell 206とかだが、
KH4はかつて南氷洋の捕鯨船に乗って、空から鯨を
見つけるのに使われていたものでもある。富士山測候所建設
の資材を運んだのもKH4だ。

比較的新しいJetRanger (Bell 206の別名）などは
ともかく、KH4は音がうるさいのでオーストラリアや
ニュージーランドでマスタリングといって、放牧している
羊を集めるのに重宝されたのだ。

消毒の話が、とんだ展開をしてしまった。
今朝5時過ぎから消毒を始めて、10箇所2haを終えるのに
1時半までかかったということを書くつもりだった。
早朝はよかったのだが、9時ころから風邪が強くなって
随分難儀してしまった。ワイン用の葡萄は垣根の間
を行ったり来たりするので、散布量は巨峰ほどではないが
時間がかかるのだ。

今朝はまだ涼しくてよかったが、真夏だと6時過ぎから
暑いので、結構つらい。合羽を着てスピードスプレイヤーを
運転するので、サウナに入ったように
汗でびしょびしょになる。

午後、ジャガイモ畑で草取り少々。
発芽は点々とだが、大分大きくなってきた。
どういうわけかピンク色の花を咲かせているのがあった。
畝の中のそば（去年そばを作った畑なので）は
白と赤の花を咲かせていた。

Agricultural spraying has benn
called sterilization for long
around here. When I went to primary school,
spraying was done by helicopters for rice
paddy and apple orchard in early morning.

There is no more helicopter spraying but
it used to be a common sight everywhere in Japan.

Before I started aircraft leasing, I had been in
charge of selling used helicopters to the foreign
buyers. Most of the helicopters was once held by
operators of which main business was spraying.
They were mainly KH4 and Bell 206. KH4 was once
operated in South Antarctic Ocean carried by
whale cath boats to find out whales. It was the
one that carried construction materials of
weather station on Mt. Fuji.

Other than newer Jet Ranger (Bell 206), KH4 was exporte
to Australia and New Zealand for mustering because
it had big noize. Mustering is to gather sheeps
to one location.

I sarted the topic of steriliation but
it went on wrong path.
I was to write that I started spraying after 5am
and finished at around 1:30 pm today because
I had spray 10 lacations for 2ha. The condition
was OK before 9am but later the wind got stronger
and spraying in the wind was not easy. As I have to
go along each rows in the winegrape vineyards,
it takes more time than in case
of Kyoho vineyards though the amount of agents
are less.

It was cooler this morning but in the mid summer
it becomes a hard job as I have to shed sweat in
the rain wear. It was as if I had been sauna.

In the afternoon today, I pulled some weeds in
potato farm. The bud bursting is not uniform but
they plant got bigger. There was one pink flower
of potato which might be unusual. I though potate
flowers are white. In the potato rows, buchwheat
is in flowering time. The potato farm was used to
grow soba (buckwheat) last year.

東京方面から3人ほどの訪問者あり。
わざわざ遠くからお越し頂いたのに、
あまりたいした話ができずに
申し訳ないですね。

就農希望なのか、葡萄栽培をやるのか
よく目的がわからなかったので畑を
案内しても要領を得たのか得なかったのか。

その後分かったのだが、生食用葡萄作りは
とても作業が大変なので当面
やる気はなくて、ワイン用の葡萄栽培を
農業民宿をやりながら
メニューにいれようかな、という所の様だ。
できれば、ワインにしてお客さんに出せれば
いいですよね。

単に就農希望なら、やめた方がいいですよ
と言うつもりだったのだが、そういう訳でも
無謀な考えでもないので安心。また、
農業体験のできる宿泊場所の提供と、自分で
作った野菜等を提供したいとか、大分
私と志向性がにているので、いろいろと
話込んだ。

そういえば最近奄美大島に移住を考えている友人
が、やはりワイン葡萄をつくりたいと言ってきた。
南太平洋の島（タヒチ）でもタイでも葡萄を作って
ワインにしているのだから、奄美大島でも
できるだろう。品種としては、カリニャンが
いいのかな？ さて、日本に苗木があるかどうか。

I got three visitors today. I felt
sorry for them because I did not
know if their purpose was accomplished
or not.

As I did not know whether they
wanted to start farming or grape
growing, I was not sure if
my talks in the vineyards
might be meaningful to them or not.

After lunch, I found that they would not
start farming for their living or
table grape growing but they were wondering
if winegrape growing would be included
in their farming menu for their farm stay
planning as their business. Winegrape growing
as one of the menu should be nice and especially
if they could provide with their own wine to
their cusotmers.

I was ready to discourage them if they had been
thinking strat farmin for their living. But they
had another idea and were realistic which made me
feel much better.

Their plan to start farm stay by providing their own
vegetables and local food is quite similar to
my idea,too. I liked their idea and their courage
to start new thing. I hope they will be successful.

By the way, one of my friends called me the
other day telling me that he was thinking to
start winegrape growing in Amami-Oshima, an
island south-west of Kyushu Island. I told him
that should be feasible as the people in the islnads
in South Pacific Ocean (Tahiti)or in Thailand are making
wine grapes locally and wines, too. I wonder
whether Carignan should be suitable for the
weather overthere.

昨日午後からの雨が朝まで続いた。
気温も涼しい位であった。

午後今年開墾した畑で、添え木を全部の
苗木につけたあと巨峰畑へ。

先日の強風で大分枝が飛ばされている。
新梢も大分伸びたので、枝を棚に上げたり
重なった枝を棚の空間を埋めるように
誘引しなおす。前回とり残しの副芽も
掻く。

作業をしていると、なにやら棚の上から
地面に落ちる物体がある。よく見ると
カエルでした。棚の上で産卵したのか、
これからの時季よく畑で見かけます。

今週から防除の農薬散布をしたり、
房きり用の薬剤散布をしたりと
忙しくなる。今週は瓜を植える段取りも
やらねばならない。いよいよ忙しくなってきた。
今までもやる事は山とあったのだが、
これからは息つく暇も無くなるほどの
忙しさになる。

It was raining in the morning since yesterday
afternoon. It was rather cooler today.

After the rain, I installed the support next
to the youg vines in the new vineyard.
On finishing it, I drove to a Kyoho vineyard.

The branches were blown to comingle each other
or drop from the tendon trellis. I repositioned
them to cover empty space and trained the branches
and new shoots. At the same time, I removed
secondary new shoots which were left over from
last training.

Something dropped from the overhead trellis on the
ground, a tiny green object. It was a frog. Did it
lay eggs over there ? I often see the frogs in my
Kyoho vineyards from now on.

This week onwards agricultural agen sprays will
continue and the heavy work of bunch cutting will
start soon. I will plant melon vegetables this week,
too. I will be very busy with all these things.
Of course I had a lot to do until tody but I will
be really busy for next two months.

最近温度が上がってきて、
冬の間固かったワインが大分
美味しくなってきました。

特にメルロー2006　キュヴェ・マサコ
優しさの内にも、芯の感じさせるしっかりもの
になってきました。お薦めです。

また、巨峰辛口2006、これは赤ですが、しっかり
と冷やしていただくといいです。香りと
ボディが常温よりさらに引き締まり、存在感
を発揮します。冷やして美味しくなる赤はそう
ないですが、なかなか珍しいワインになっています。

今はもう巨峰ワインは仕込んでないですが、
専用品種の赤はかなり期待できます。
北信地域はやはりポテンシャルが高いと思います。

皆で、百々川橋合唱。　名曲です。

After winter as the temperature goes up,
the wine is getting better due to
maturation.

Especially Merlot 2006 Cuvee Masako is good.
It is soft and tender wine but it has strength
of motherhood as the spine of the wine. It is
very much recommendable.

Also, Khyoho 2006 is good especially when it is
chilled. Its aroma and the body get sharper. This
wine is better when it is served chilled which is
unusual for red wine. It is a rare wine indeed.

Since last year I have not made Kyoho wine, but red
varieties seem very good. I am sure that wine grape
in north of Nagano Pred. have very good potential
for wine. The photo shows the inflorescence of
Cabernet Franc today.

By the way, we have SNS 2nd anniversary BBQ party
today. We all sang "Dodo gawa bashi", such a cool song!
