It's already August.
We had very hot July so I don't realize
we are in August. In about 2 weeks time afer
Obon period in Japan, I wonder if I start feeling
the breeze of autumn. Last year, I remeber we had
clear wind change after Obon period.
Today I got many things to eat from friends
and acquatintances. Many people make summer vegetables
in their own yard for own use. It is the time when
the summer vegetables become very tasty. I got today
cucumber, egg plant, zucchini, tomato, green pepper,
sweet corn. Many people offered potatoes but I declined
because I have too many my own potatoes.
Speaking of zucchini, many people ask me how
we can cook it. The vegetable is not familier
with Japanese dishes and even those who grow
zucchini don't know how to cook it. I don't,
either. Generally, we can stir fry, grill, or make
a soupd with it. I made miso soup with potatoes which
was OK. Some people make Japanese pickles with rice
fermented paste (nuka zuke). Tempura is deible but
the center part of the round slice becomes too soft
and the texture is not so goo.
What I recommend is the zucchini stick fry
(crumbled fry) with tartar souce dip. Many
years ago when I stayed in Dallas for a few
months during summer over 40 degrees C, I
used to go to a pub for beer with zucchini
fry with dip. It went very well with cold
beer!
I sprayed bordeaux today in all the winegrape
vineyards and one portion of kyoho vineyards.
But actually I sprayed cocide-bordeauz with
Clefnon powder but not sulfuric cupper with
lime.
The timing was very much delayed this year.
After time consuming berry thinning of kyoho,I had to
finish topping and mowing in the wine vineyards
before I spray bordeax. Tomorrow I will spray
in the rest of the kyoho vineyards and will take
some rest.
You may wonder why Bordeax, the most famous
wine producing area in France is used for the
agro spray. It was said that, once upon a time,
the farmers sprayed lime in their vineyards to
mark the grape thief. They found that in such
vineyards where people sprayed lime they found
very little disease somehow. Therefore the people
overthere started used this material as fungicide.
Then people began to call it bordeax.
The cupper ion is actually effective fungicide
so they people shoud have used sulfuric acid first
of all. Therefore the use of lime for thief identifying
may have been added at later day.
Please don't be surprised even you found
a vineyard turned to white on one day. The
colour is that of lime.
How cocide-bordeax function against fugus
is a bit different. Cupper ion comes
out from the sprayed inorganic cupper after
it combined with CO2, air and organic aide, etc.
This cupper ion works on the fugus.Cocide-bordeax
has rather neutral pH but once the balance goes
to lower pH which is very acid, it will help to
produce more cupper ion. It will cause damage to
grape vines. Therefore we often add Clefnon which
is Calcium-hydroxide and deterre the occurence of the
damage to the grape and vines.

I joined an excursion to
Iida region for Green Tourism
study leaving vineyard operation with
the helpers.
This excursion was arranged one month
ago and I should have been very easy to
participate in the tour but actually I was
not because the Kyoho operation was much
delayed beyond the usual year's schedule.
We visited Minami Shinshu Sightseeing Cooperation and
Sanwa Farm.
Mr. Takahasi, the Manager of Minami Shinshu Sightseeing Cooperation
outlined the history and the development of its business with
the local people which is now well known for its successful
agritourism business model receiving students excursion trips
from 70 schools with 10,500 students and having around 60,000
people participating in its activities programs.
It was very much interesting to know that the beginning of
the business was to organise outdoor activities for school
excursion trips though current program is based on agriculture.
It was as if I was watching an NHK program "Proffessionals".
He stressed the phylosophy of providing
these people with the 'local real things
as they are and as the local people always do'.
He would not impose demands on the farmers but
respect their convenience. It seems one of the
reason of the success. He said he was lucky
to receive the cooperation from the local
community. Of course his efforts should have
drawn such cooperation. Because of their
success, he has no choice but to turn down
the inquiries from the schools of which number
is equivalent to the number of schools they
can accept every year.
After this cooperation, Mr. Takahashi took us
to a tourist's farm which is quite successful
and the president explained us what he was doing.
He and his family accepts studens home stay, too.
He is talkative and seems to be very active and
innovative. He can sell all the produce from his
5ha of farms which is the ideal sales conditions
to all the farmers even though it is not so easy.
He is doing so but he does not seem to do any
very special things. His success should be
because of his daily efforts and endless thinking.
This is the similar feeling that I felt at the
both places that they did not very special things
but both seemed to try to cater the customers'
desires or demands. They are not treating their
customers like a treasure but they are providing
opportunities and experiences that they would
enjoy very much. And these enjoyable things are
merely a part of their daily life and the things
that uses their products. It's easy to tell like
this but extraordinary power and efforts should
have been needed.
On the way back to Suzaka, we dropped by at the
Green Farm farmers' shop of which annual sales
mounts to 500million JPYen and the biggest farmers'
direct shop in Nagano. This shop also provides
a kind of joy of shopping. It is like a Don Qihote
of agricultural products. The lecture by its president
was introduced in this blog before. The real shop looks
a bit shabby but the shop make the cutomer enjoyable in
finding out bargain items. There seems full of bargain
items.
I received two visitors from Singapore
and Taiwan. Mr.I, a Japanese businessman
living in Singapore and Mr. M., a
Taiwanese businessman doing many
business internationally, both of them
are doing international business.
They did not have any other
particular big business in Japan
this time so they have visited me
all the way from their base location.
It' s been long time since I quit
the previous business and came into
a rural city of Nagano. Such visitors
are always welcom and very much
encouraging.
I arranged their accomodation at my
friend's pension at Minenohara so that
we would be able to drink. I invited
another American friend recently came to
live in Minenohara. Four of us enjoyed
talking and drinking my wines.
Very appropriate advices were given by Mr.M.
who has been developing business internationally
over the drink. None of us are very good
drinker but they seemed to like my wines. Interestingly
their favorite wine was different.
The wines served were, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc,
Chardonnay and Merlot.
I enjyoed very much their comments on my wines
even though I found that my wines except Merlot
need more time for maturing.
This morning the two friends woke up very early
and started their business already by checking and
sending mails on theri own PCs. It was a holidy
for me but their normal business day!
I took them to show my Kyoho and winegrape
vineyards, and did the tour visiting hot open
air spring, waterfall, soba restaurant, Miso
facotry (thank you Shioya Jyojo, its president
and the facotry managaer), sourvenir shopping
and Zenkoji. A lot of things were packed in
two days.
In any case I am very happy
that they enjoyed their stay here very much.

At 5:30am, we harvested the potatoes
grown with no spray and grass grown methodo.
The patch of farm yard looks as if a grass field
but we had enough harvest. Each of five of us was
able to take back more than one apple container of
Dejima potatoes and
one harvest cage of Dawn of Inca potatoes.
Considering that we only spent three day of
work in the potate yard, we should be happy with
the successful harvest.
After eraly morning potato harvest,
I went out in the wine grape vineyards
and continued the tipping under the
heat. It was so hot that I felt almost
fainting.
In the afternoon, I had to stop working
because of thelightning and
heavy rain like a storm at around 3:30.
I had to cancel a meeting for the vegetable
melon growing in the field. I saw many farmers
rushing out from the wrapping of kyoho.
The storm continue for full three hours
and I thought the live by Mizukure-Tobans
would be cancelled scheduled at 5pm
in the parking of Buckwheat noodle shop
Hatcho-no-Mori. However, I went out there
to see how it would be. On the way to
Hatch Mountain, I saw the preparation was going
on for the fire works tonight at around
Garyu-bashi bridge. Some people started gathering.
Policemen also started preparing for traffic control.
Are there goint to be fireworks with such bad
weather?
The music live was under preparetion when I
reached the venue. They moved inside the
buckwheat noodle shop. It started at 6pm, the
audiences were eating noodles. Such a ralxing
atmosphere! The musicians were New Beads band copying
famous B'z. Kura-no-Mori for Ocarina and classic guitar,
Hitoshi Nakamura famous for Nagano Puruple, and main band
Mizukure Tobands.
While enjyoing music, we also enjoyed looking down the
fireworks from the mountain. I liked the song
of Nagano Purple played by the collaboration of
Toshi-chan and Mizukure band. I liked Nira-Senbei song
by Mizukure, too. Nira senbe is a Japanese pancake like
local pancake food. Flour, egg and chives are used and
panfried with Miso or sweet soy sauce.
I think Mizukure is the local band like Souther all stars or
Komekome Club. Their major debut is soon ?
