After having picked a few varieties of
winegrapes which I promised to send to
a wine shope in Tokyo area, I went to
pick Kyoho grapes for the second time
today. Kyoho season is nearing to its
end.
It is getting colder and the time has come
for apples in mid October.
I happend to find apples to be packed on the
loading platform of a mini truck of the
neighbouring farmer. The apples were being arranged
to be sent.
The yellow apples are Shinano Gold having harder
texture and its best season has just started. On the
up right are three Shinano Sweet which is sweet as its name.
The others are Akibae of which colour turns very dark
These three apples are name as Shinano Three Brothers.
They are realtively recent kind and become available
in mid season.
In the flickering sun light, don't they look so delicious ?
'Revitalization' is what I have thought
about recently. Why do we need revitalization?
Some would say that we need certain level of population
and industries to keep sustainable community.
The industries usually mean manufacturing sector
and it is a common sense among the people
in administration side.
Agricultrual output per year is about
60million US dollars (some say that the average
age of farmers is over 65!) while the
manufactureing industry sales amount to over 200 million
US dollars per year. It is often seen as the most
effective way to achieve the target tax income
by invite manufaturers. Demands for construction,
employment and increase of residents are expected.
As suchm there are so many Kasseika heros created
throughout Japan.
However, I wonder who is the promoter
of such revitalization. I have never
heard anybody saying that it is a big
problem that Suzaka is inactive.
Of course, the downtown Suzaka (where is it
first of all?) is not animated at all.
Five years have passed since I returned here.
I have begun to feel that this calm and serenity
is comfortable to live. In the neighbouring
town Obuse, a famous small town
for its activities, I always find something new
every time I pass through it with so many visitors
strolling around. They seem to have so many
interesting events, too.
On the other hand, a quite city
and a 'who knows ?' town. But
it is calm, matured and best to
induldge in thinking. We have
hidden waterfalls, a beloved
park rendering season's
beauty with hundreds of cherry trees.
A big maze town with many narrow streets
which puzzle foreigners. Don't you think
that widening roads would make all the
cars just go by? A town sorrounded by
small and big mountains with rice paddies,
vege fields, etc., giving tasty rice, miso,
veges, fruits, sake and wines!.
What's wrong if only residents can enjoy
these things here? We may not need to have
industries parks and bring tourists by bus
to sell what they don't really want.
In our town, pride and industrious
farmers and manufacturers are already
in the top level of domestic and international
markets. There is quite a few things that we
are proud of. How come we should force those
who are not in real problem. They may not want
to be forced to do something. I wonder who is
in real big problem here?
Let's enjoy to live in this moderately-easy-to-live
town in calm and serenity. I don't mean we do nothing.
On the contrary, we do whatever we can enjoy by ourselves
first of all.

Why don't you join the wine grape harvest event?
Saturday, October 18.
Just a bit of Syrah. We can finish quickly.
No BBQ. We will have a light lunch after
picking. A lunch in the vineyard may be
more fun. I will decide what to do
after I find the number of people.
Saturday, October 25.
Quite a few bunches will be picked.
We will harvest Cabernet Sauvignon
and Cabernet Franc. I hope many people
joint the harvest. Hopefully we will finish
before lunch and will have a BBQ in the
vineyard.
The vineyard is sorrounded by apple
orchard and the red and yellow apples
are beautiful with the background
of dark green mountains. You can
enjoy my wines.
Those who want to enjoy such an
event, please contact me through this
web page or contact me by e-mail
if you knew mine.
Looking forward to receiving
your 'Yes, I will help you!'
I participated in Shinshu Suzaka Bringing
Hometown to town Fair held at Oyama Shopping
Street in Tokyo on the 10th and 11th.
Agricultural produces were sold and
Suzaka Tourist Information were introduced
to the people at the roofed animated shopping street
in the downtown residential area.
The shop has only 10square meters but offered as
the event shop and rural towns were eager to
use the space to sell its products and introduce
themselves. Nagano city was to visit there in the
same month of October.
In such a daily life area, my wines
were not exptected to be sold well and
I sold vegesm apples and grapes most of
the time.
Oyaki sold well as always and moutnain
fruit, shelled chestnuts, sticky potatoes,
beans were popular.
Despite of the poor sales of wines,
it was fun to join such an event apart
from every day routin work of packing
grapes, especially to sell our own produce
in big city like Tokyo and there were new
findings, too.
Even though apples were sold, my juices
were sold rather quickly which had not been
sold well at Azabu in summer. The most expensive
Kyoho Ice wines were purchased by just passers by.
Cidres were not sold at all which had been sold
well eleswhere.
In any case, I thank you very much
for my friends who
visited me with very short notice.
Let's have a drink at next time I see
you.
From a path to a vineyard in an
apple orchard, the cresent was
seen above Myokaku-san mountain
beyond a mid-season apple, Akibae.
The sky was blue and the light
made the shadows of apple trees
longer. The night would
fall soon.
The sound and the scent of autumn
flew around me.
