今日から巨峰の房切り開始。
今年は、カウントしていたお手伝い
の方々の都合がつかずに、僅か
2人で開始という、先行きを憂慮させる
スタートとなりました。

おまけに明日は雨の予報で、出はなを
くじかれた感じです。しかも今週は
どうも雨がちで、さらに作業が遅れそう
です。私は雨でも強行しますが、
お手伝いの方々にはそうは行かず。

後半勝負になりそうですが、それとて
天気がどうなるか。最後はどう
つじつまを合わせるか。

今のところ開花8日、満開10日の予測ですが
今日も涼しく明日も雨という事は、
もう少し遅くなるかも。花房もまだ小さいの
が大分あるし。そう期待しましょう。

Bunch forming season has just begun.
I started it today with only one
helper. Some people I expected to help
me were not able to do so due to their
own reasons. It made me feel a bit
worrying. Can I work it out?

What is worse, it will rain
tomorrow most probably. I could not
make a jump start this year which is
a pity. More rain is expected this week
and it would further delay the operation.
I will do it in the rain of course but
I don't want fource other people to do so.

I may have to gather hands in a late season
to finish the bunch forming in time. But it
still depends on the weather. I really wonder
what will happen.

The start of flowering and bull bloom is
expected on June 8 and 10 respectively.But
recent low temperature may delay such
schedule. Then I would have more time.
I foud baby bunches are still small
and tight which mean it will take some more
timeto reach flowering.

早朝から薬剤散布。昨日からの雨で
まず葉っぱの水滴を揺さぶりおとして
から散布。今日は巨峰だけなので、4反分
ほど。雨の翌日は、早朝より葉っぱが乾いて
からの方が気が楽だ。午後からは乗用草刈機で
草刈り。

昨日バイオディーゼル燃料と菜種油のこと
を書いた。その後で、アラスカに良く行く
友人と話していたら、アラスカでもよく
使われている、とのことだった。
この車の燃料なんだと思う？と聞かれた
ことがあるという。答えは「クッキングオイルさ」
だとのこと。そうか～、そういえばチップスとか
フライドチキンとか、やたら揚げ物多いよな～
と妙に納得。

氷点下4度くらいでエンジンがかかりにくくなるかも
しれない、と言われたのだが、アラスカでも使われ
ているのなら問題なかろう。多分あちらでは流動性
をあげる工夫をしているんだろうな。

写真は、これが最後のビンテージになるかもしれない
須坂産無農薬栽培の菜種油と、ハチドリコーヒー。
コーヒーは有機栽培ですが、それが理由で買ったわけでは
なく、フェアトレードだからです。

明日から房切り本番。誰かお手伝いが必要です。

I started spraying early in the morning.
I had to shake branches to shed rain on the
leaf. I sprayed only 4,000sqm. It should be
easy to spray after the rain dries up.　Mowing by
cart mower in the afternoon

I mentioned about biodiesel fuel yesterday
for my SS. I met a frined mine later yesterday who
frequent to Alaska. She told me that they used BDF
, too even in such a cold place. No wonder they eat
a lot of chips and fries.

Regarding BDF, I was told that engine might become
slow to start under four C dgree. They may use
something to obtain enough fluidity even in the
cold winter there.

The photo shows the (last vintage) ripesheed oil and
Humming bird coffee which was grown by organically.
I bought it not because it was organic but it was
imported in a manner of fair trade.

Bunch forming will start tomorrow in my vineyards.
I need help.

数日前からの予報通りの雨。
午前中一時小止みになったが、
家でPCに向かっていた。

お昼頃友人から電話があり、
今日は畑仕事はなしですと言うと、
野辺辺りじゃお百姓さんは
みんな畑で働いているよ、と叱責
を受ける。でも、その頃から雨脚が
強まって、結局畑仕事はお休み。

雨の中明日以降の準備をしつつ
畑を見回ると昨日の強風で、
巨峰畑の枝がかなり落ちて
しまった。明日以降房切りと同時に
誘引のやり直しだ。

今日明日とクラフトフェア@アートパーク。
知り合いが、アトラクションでギターと
オカリナの演奏をしている。雪でも降るんじゃ
ないかと言いながら演奏していたが、
明日は天気が良さそうです。午後3時頃から
やるそうですので、行って見て下さい。

食用廃油からバイオディーゼルを作っている
須坂エコライフネットワークから農機具（SS)
用にバイオディーゼルを18リットル買う。
昨日は、同じＮＰＯが作っている、
遊休荒廃農地で栽培した菜種油
を買った。今年も1.5ha程栽培しているが、
7月に収穫に使うコンバインの手配ができないで
困っているとのこと。この分では、収穫できない
かもと。

お米や麦、そば、大豆等穀類はみんなそうですが、
収穫のための機械の手当てが一番のネック
なんですね。1台何百万円もするし、
小規模な栽培だと採算とれないし。
人手でやるには人海戦術しかないし。
そういえば、昔小学校にも農繁休業というのが
春と秋に1週間ずつあった。機械が無いときは
家族総出だったんです。でも今は…。

It rained as forecasted a few days
before. It seemed to stoop raining for
a while in the morning but I was sitting
at the dest facing the PC.

A friend of mine　called me at around
noon time. She found me not working
today and told me that there are so many
farmers in the vineyards in the rain.
I sounded like a lazy farmer but the rain
became heavier around that time. I gave up
going out in the field today.

In any case, I drove to the Kyoho vineyards
to bring stairs for the operation next week and
found many branches were hanging down from
the overhead trellis. I have to train them again
by doing bunch forming,too!

There is The Craft Fair held at Suzaka Art Park
today and tomorrow. Friends of mine plays the
guitar and okarina. They played many times
in the coldness by wondering if it would snow.
It will be fine tomorrow. So please do come out
in the woods to stroll around the shops and
look for them at around 3pm.

I bought today biodiesel oil for my agricultural
machine from Suzaka Eco-Life Network. They make
it from used cooking oil collected locally.
They also make vegetable oils from rapesheeds which
I bought yesterday. Although they grow rape this
year again in the abandoned farm yards
but they are in a trouble not being
able to allocate a harvester for the harvest of
1.5ha of rape in July. They may have to give up
harvest this year.

Cereals like rice, wheat, buckwheat, soy beans,
all need big harvester but it is too expensive
for a small size farmers. It costs some million
Japanese Yen! If it should be done by hand, you
need some tens of people to accomplish. It remainded
me of my school days when we had spring and autumn
special leaves to help families during the each
busiest week in the farm yard. All the families
were required to work at that time.　Then now...

午前中は天気がよくてずっと巨峰畑
で誘引作業をしてました。来週から
房切りを始めるので、新梢を誘引して
房が棚の下を向き、枝に陽がよく
当るようにするのです。

これからも新梢はどんどん伸びるので
余りきつくはやらないのですが、今年は
どういうわけか風が強くて、この間軽く留めて
おいたのに、枝が絡まったり、ぶら下がったり、
棚面が暗くなったりしていて、やり直しです。

午後になって風が猛烈に吹き始めて、まるで台風
並みです。枝があおられたり一箇所に
吹き寄せされたり。また、風の抵抗が
強く、枝がぽっきりと折れたりと大変でした。

一休みに、近くの「ガーデンソイル」さんに
お邪魔しました。友人の喫茶店が
流行りますようにとのおまじないに、
蹄鉄を買いに行ったのです。
私も一つ持っています。
今度玄関に取り付けられるように
しようかな。

It was fine in the morning. I was
doing training new shoots to the
pergola(overhead) trellis of a Kyoho
vineyard. As I will start bunch forming
next week, I need to make the bunches
hung from the trellis for easy operation
and by doing this the new shoots can receive
ample sunshine to develop next year buch
primordia.

The training of shoots are not so
stringent this time as they grow everyday
and sooner or later I have to do it again
before bunch thinning. Some how we have
many more windy days this year and the shoots
are blown to comingle and some bunches are hanging
down from the trellis.

In the afternoon, the wind started to
blow strongly and the operation got
difficult. The wind was so strong as if
it were a typhoon. The shoots were blown making
it difficult to tarin and got broken,too.

I went to Garden Soil, a plant and gardening shop
nearby to buy a horseshoe for a cafe run by a friend
of mine so that a lot of luck would come to
the business. I have one for myself, too. I kept
it on a bookshelf for long but I will arrange it
to hang at the entrance so that a lot of luck will
come to me, too.

今日は日滝地区は農協の
巨峰房切り講習会です。
午前中の雨も止み、葡萄農家が
葡萄のすすみ具合をやきもき
しながら情報交換にやってきます。
講習会といっても、この時季までの
内容は年によって大きく変わることが
無いのです。いよいよ来週から
房切りが始まります。

房切りといっても、一般の人は何を
するのか分かりませんが、一つ一つの
葡萄の房の子供に手をかけて成形
の作業をするのです。下の写真の様な
作業ですが、これを開花前後
2週間で終わらせなければならないのです。

どんなに大変な作業かというと、
10a（333坪）あたり、約2万個あるといわれる
房の一つ一つについてやります。
ですから、3反分あれば6万個です。
一房10秒かけるとして、全部で60万秒つまり
10000分、167時間、1日12時間のまず食わず
トイレも行かずでやって14日かかります。
如何に大変な作業か分かります。
畑のそばに車が何台も止まって、雨の中も
作業する風景が6月半ばまで続きます。

もちろん如何に効率良くやるかについては、
人それぞれにノウハウがあるのですが、
最終的に袋をかける前に10aあたり4000個くらい
にするわけですので、如何に歩留まりの悪い
作業か分かるでしょう。でも、こういうところに
手をかけてこそ美しい芸術品の葡萄ができるのです。

6月からまたガソリンが上がるので
早めにガスステーションへ行くと、列が
できています。最後尾の私はまだ道路の上です。
その後にも4～5台並びました。土曜日は
どこも混雑しそうです。

We had a JA organized Bunch Forming
meeting today. Almost same contents
were told every time but the grape
growers gathered for new information
and for the exchage of information
of others' vine conditions.

Non farmers do not know what the
bunch forming is. It is to remove
bunch tip and unwanted part from
each bunch as shown below. This
operation should be done within
two weeks of flowering.

You can imagine the hardness of this work
as follows: there is around 20,000 banby bunches
in 1,000sqm of vineyard. Each bunch are said to
be worked. If you had 3,000sqm of Kyoho vineyard,
you would work on around 60,000 bunches, and if
you spent 10sec for one bunch, then it would take
167hours which is 14days by 12hrs work a day without
resting, eating, and toilet. That's why you can see
many cars parking near vineyards at this time.
You cannot stop this work even if it rains!

Each grower has its own know-how to do it
efficiently. Because one only needs around
4,000 bunches per 1,000sqm, you can tell
how low yield operation it is. Such labour
intensive work can lead to a beautifully
formed state-of-art fruit in autumn.

I went to fill up gas before the price hike
in June. As soon as I lined up at the end of
the queue on the road, I had 4-5 cars behind me.
There would be a mess on Saturday.
