The benefactor
The man passed away. He was a great benefactor to me personally and to Kusunoki Winery.
He was out of the social activities due to his illness for a while but so many people attended at today’s farewell ceremony. He was loved by so many people for his good personality. When I saw his last death face at his house, he looked as if he had been alive and that he had almost talked to me ‘Have you beenn OK, Shige-chan?’
He had many relatives and many small grand children gathered for him. I found certain resemblances in each child and felt the strong bond of the family. They were at the age liking to play with each other but they were all quiet and well behaved at the sorrow of the adult families.
My father, he and his bother and sisters had grown up like real brothers & sisters and I frequented to his house when young and ate dinners together. There were always some other people visiting him, so after I grew up I remembered they spent a lot of money in food for so many visitors.
He and his older bother worried about me a lot. When I was living in Singapore, his older brother happened to stay in Indonesia on his business and invited me to his house when I visited Jakarta. We met a few times there and I came to know later that he was going to hire me if I had been in unfavorable situation. He reported to my father through his younger brother that I had been OK which I was told later. They both were so kind and warm hearted. His older brother has been dead already for some years.
At today’s ceremony, a few people made speeches. Usually such speech sounds same but today each one talked about this personality and memories often stopped by the emotion which put us into tears, too. It shows every one loved him and respected him very much.
He was always kind to me and worried about me after I returned to Suzaka and started grape growing and he introduced many of his friend company owners.
Here are two impressive memories about him.
One was at my father’s farewell ceremony about 13 years ago. It was in the morning of the ceremony day. Brother and sisters of my father came to stay at a nearby inn for the ceremony. At the inn, the guests were supposed to have breakfast at the dinning hall. When one of my aunts came back from the breakfast, the futon was removed and the jade juzu was missing from the table in the room where she remembered to leave it. The incident was told at home and I almost made a big claim phone call, he quietly talked to us but not in criticizing manner that we should not doubt people that way and that juzu could have been lost by chance anywhere. At his talk, the juzu was not spoken about again. It was not found any way but ... It reminded me of my father who did not doubt other people easily and he was inclined to be pushed to purchase something by visit salesman. I wonder they both had similar character? But his words stay within me since then.
Another one happened more recently.
While after I started grape growing and was a member of a conference of local economy boost, I made alcoholic apple ciders with locally grown apples. The cider was quite a new product to local people and a press release event was organized. The event was taken up by local papers and TVs and I believe that cider became popular and that other regions started to make ciders since then. Anyhow, many major faces of local companies who were the main members of the conference were invited to the event and I asked him to make a breaking speech of the event. I just expected a normal speech about local economy boosting and the new product. However, to my big surprise, he said to the attendance,’’Please help this guy, Shigeyuki Kusunoki who returned to Suzaka and is trying to start winery. Your support is in need !...’’ I just remember these phrases only. At that time, I was a bit arrogant enough to want to start everything by myself even with thanking him for his words. But later on everything went on as he might have predicted then. Such thing is not easy to talk to people even for one’s own family but he asked people for help for me. I was not his real family in terms of blood bond but he did not hesitate at all to do so for me. It shows an example of his warm character and many people respected him for such.
I got many support from the local people and local municipal government when I build the winery thanks to his introduction of me to his friends and acquaintances. At his words, many people may have wondered who Kusunoki was he talked about and many people started to think about the wine business in Suzaka.
When I brought a bottle of Kyoho wine I first made at neighboring winery, he introduced a famous artist for the label. One of his close friends was the relative of the artist. Later on his friend became my mentor on business giving me many good advices and also introducing his friends, too. I am very happy to get such a relationship. Of course, I used a drawing by the artist on my first wine bottle.
He and my mentor arranged a wine drinking session for their friends when I made a first Chardonnay wine I grew. Many of the members of the session have supported me since then.
He was such a kind person that voluntarily took care of foreign students and guests at home, too. So I hear there are many people admire him as their Japanese father in Thailand, Indonesia, and so on. These daughters and sons should shed their tears if they knew that he passed away.
My memories of him are just a small portion compared with those owned by his family and the other people who knows him more. But just a few drops of his mercy given to me was great part in my heart. I cannot find words other than ‘Thank you very much.’
In order to return something to what I was given by him, I will try hard to carry on business so that I can return to my supporters someday and live right so that I can return something to the society.
I have been always moved at the cares of him by his family after he became ill. I believe that his family is in a big sorrow at his loss now but I was glad that there were always deep love around him. Please be strong and get over this hard time.
Please rest in peace now and please take good care of your family from the heaven now. I wish your soul and your family’s will always stay in calm and full of love.
Sincerely I thank you very much for everything from the bottom of my heart.
I pray for your peaceful rest and eternal love to your family.
