Vineyard operation of this time

I have rats damage in part of my
vineyards. They bite trunk of the
vines in the ground. The damaged
part looks like a shaved pencil top.
Around ten vines were dead at the
beginning of this season.

I had to plant young vines or rootstock
for green grafting at the space. Therefore
I have removed grasses around each vine
at one vineyard which had had the biggest
damage. When I find the rat whole, I have
to break it and trace the whole to break
it as much as I can. However, there is a
new whole by the trunk in a few days.
Only if the rats did not eat my vines,
I need not to do so. Can you imagine my
feeling at finding a damaged vine after
five to six years of cares.

Today I borrowed a small size tractor to
plough shallow in one of my vineyards.
I will plant rye wheat seeds tomorrow for
soil amelioration purpose. Manual ploughing
is too hard as yesterday so I decide to
use machine. Rye is said to
grow its roots very deep in the ground
and to have deep plough effects. I just
wondered if the rye roots compete with
vine roots by avoiding each other. But
as it is said to be good to grow
rye in such a soil, I will try by
praying to have better grapes in the
future seasons.
