Packaging & Quality Management
EMS, QA, TQC, Kaizen, HACCP, ISO9000
BRL Hardy

Packaging and Quality Management class at
Adelaide Uni began with the lecture delivered by
a Winemaster cum wine purchase/exporter at
BRL Hardy when I was studying winemaking there.
According to him, the export of Australian wine was
21million OZ dollars in 1985, which increased to 180million
in 1990 and reached to 2.1 billion OZ dollars making it
a main export of Australia. UK and USA are the main importer
consisting of around 75% with the rest of main developed
countries with sever import standard on F&B, especially
on residual agrochemicals.
The export developtment was supported by
Quality Assurance System that was florished
in Japan in 1950s and imported to Australia in
1990s. The class continued and focused on Environmental
Management Sysem, QA, TQC, Kaizen, HAXXP, ISO9000, etc.
The point is, QA is the base of all industy sectors
and it has such tremendous influence even on a
nation's economy. The adaptation of the idean and
enpowerment of QA even determine the future
of a company.
At BRL Hardy, the production of grape and
wine is clearly prescribed in the contracts with
farmers and the wineries and the QC is severly
implemented. His point was to understand why and
how important QA was.
I spent too much space to start today's topic,
the presentation of QA at Asuzac Foods, Co., Ltd.
One of my friends asked me if I wanted to join her.
Of course, I did. I was very much interested in
how such a food processing company implemented QA
in actual food processing system.
My impression? I am at a loss what to say.
Its QA is quite thorough and it seems that
there is no room, either by chance of on
purpose, for a problem to occur. By setting aside
the fact that it was the presentation prepared and done
by the company, I was moved at such a sincere attitude.
Sampling checks are so often that
it will deter an evil intention. They
sometimes include an error goods to check
which stage can find it. PDCA cycle is in
action in the factory.
The analysis of import foods is very
thorough. The include a few advanced
analysis techniques which made me feel that
their import foods would be safer than
domestic foods. They have their own farms
in Vietnam to produce such foods.
To my surprise, they have three Mass Spectro
Chromato Graphy by Shimadzu. Such new technology
makes it possible to analyze residual agrochemicals
easier at lab. The also adapt the analysis technique
to find out if the isotope sterlization is done on
foods or not. Such sterlization is legal in some
countries but in Japan. They may go for DNA analysis
for foods by GMO at next step?
Such steady efforts support the safety of foods.
We must be proud of such a company in Nagano,
especially in our hometown. It would be nice if
more and more people know about such a company.
On the contrary, I have on regeret about
the comapany's product. Even though my misunderstandig
is going away, once one look at the back descriptio
of their products, as there are so many unfamiliar
ingredients are written, it creates an image that the
food must no be good to the health. Of course, it is
not correct, but such misunderstanding should be
solved by certain consumaer education. Such PR may be
nececcary in the future.
As an example of a successful consumer
education, I introduce the case of screw
cap for wines in Australia. It used to have
an image of cheap wine but not people do not
think such closure is for cheap ones.
Even premium red wines are sold with screw cap.
It is because that the consumers now understand
that screw cap is the best to sustain the quality
of bottle wine. This may be the result of long and
steady efforts of wine industry in Australia.
Somebody seemed to tell
"Amazing Asuzac Foods!"
