Here is a radio program called Fridays Goes On broadcasted
every Friday from 10 radio stations throughout Japan including
FM Nagano. This week, the radio casters will have the gif box packed
with the souvenirs from their golf excursion to Nagano.
One of the gifts is my Kusunoki Vineyards Chardonnay 2009 which has
been recently awarded at Nagano Appellation Control sensory session.
The gift is not just a one piece of item but a box of a few items from Nagano.
The program will start at around 2pm on coming Friday.
Why don’t you listen to and apply for the gift at the Friday Goes On?
I hope you will get on a wonderful gift box.
Today the sensory evaluation of the wines for the Nagano Appellation Control
was held and three of my wines passed the test and approved as the
NAC passed label. To my surprise, one of them, Kusunoki Vineyards
Chardonnay 2009 was awarded as Encouragement Wine. The only white wine
to be awarded this time.
I was surprised because I thought recent trend of Chardonnay liking was
lighter and fresh and fruity style. But I was happy that such chardonnay style
as with intense flavor of fruit and thick and condensed palate or rather heavy
chardonnay was appreciated.
In addition to this chardonnay, my Hitakihara 2010 and
Cabernes/Merlot 2009 have also passed and approved.
This time, these three wines reached the minimum quantity
requirement and had been applied for the NAC. As all of them were
approved, Suzaka as wine region will more and more attract the
attentions of the wine lovers.
In any event, I thank you very much for the care and kind
wine making of St. Cousair’s wine making staff from the
bottom of my heart. Their wine making is great indeed.
After Tohoku Motor Way where there were so many vehicles
running on the two lane high way, we went into Sanrikudo.
There were many more cars running including police cars
from every region of Japan and SDF special vehicles. A while
after Nagamachi on the Sanrikudo, many sizable debris were seen
in the rice paddies surrounding the motor way. You can tell this
motor way built higher than those paddies saved the people
running away from the tsunami on the day.
Getting out from the Sanrikudo, we went into the suburb of
Ishinomaki City were the life seemed much the same as
ours here in Naganao. Big shopping malls seemed attracted
many shoppers as usual. But we went on and when we went
through the town near the shore, the scenery changed all of a
sudden and it was so called a ghost town except for the heavy
vehicles and the working people around them. But it was a
ghost town without housings.
Through the towns like this and others which seemed
having had no damage by the tsunami, we got closer to
Onagawa and the road was raised from the original one
in order to avoid high tide due to the land subsidence.
People have to go down from the road to go into the connecting
roads or to go into their houses. We saw some vehicles stuck with
the gap and could not move. The sea seemed calm but without this
embankment the areas would be flooded at high tide.
The houses along the road did not seemed broken even after in
Onagawa just for a while. But once we got out from the temporary
tent houses for the volunteers and passed through a traffic light
located at a lower land, we noticed whole communities just
disappeared after driving up to the top of the uphill road.
There was not a single house at all! It reminded me of the picture
of the cities after heavy bombing. When we came to a flat level
near the bay, there was just one sound building on the top of the
hill that was Onagawa Town Hospital. Other than that everything
seemed disappeared including other buildings, station, everything.
The road was cleared with debris but very bumpy and heavy
dust flared up in the air. The cleared view due to the devastation
by the tsunami, we were able to see the hill slope caved to the middle
of its height and the surrounding dead trees in brown color.
Some said the recovery was slower here than in Ishinomaki but I
wondered who would want to live again here even with water and
electricity restored because the land is now lower than the sea level.
I heard the tsunami here reached about 30m high from the sea level
but the schools and houses on the higher hill from the downtown
luckily stayed away from the devastation and many people were living
at these facilities together. I really hope the day they live calmly
will come soon. As a volunteer worker, I was able to do little. Even
I felt guilty at such huge devastation and the people there
for being powerless and useless, or for maybe having been there for
own self satisfaction, however, it was true that I wished to be able
to do anything here. I only wish if I would become a drop
form a humming bird.

I joined in a group of friends who work as volunteer
at the disaster area in Tohoku last week. They visited
the area a few times already. For me, it was the first time
to visit there and do volunteer activities for about three
days.
In Onagawa, Miyagi Prefecture, it seemed that official
operation went on to certain extent and the debris were
collected from the devastated area. The people we met there
seemed living just normal life at a glance. I found a supermarket
just 5km away was open selling almost everything and I heard
the relief aids were sufficient.
However, the devastated area was almost a ghost town in the
desert and there was no shop nearby. Without a vehicle, a suffering
people living either in the shelter or temporary housing was not able
to go out for shopping. It should be hard to watch the ruined town everyday.
One cannot imagine the hardship of the people who lost their family members.
Once it gets fine, the dust goes up in the air. At the time of high tide,
the road was covered with the seawater. Flies were countless and too much
bothering and the strong smell of seawater gets to the nose from time to time.
In such situation, I felt like doing something and saying something loudly
but it is difficult to judge what the best is to do. I cannot help but wishing
a day when the people feel calm at heart will come as soon as possible.
I rubbed to clean dirty fish baskets at a marine product processing
factory. The baskets were dirty with mud and oil that spilled from the
broken oil tanks on the shore and the work was not easy at all. As such,
anything that seemed easy usually became a hard work job.
In such circumstances, how great the people were there! There were company
managers who helped employees evacuate soon after the earthquake without
any casualty. There were people who were trying to re-start their business at a
remaining part of the factory whose roof was taken away by the tsunami.
I only hope their re-start of business would create the local employment and
consumption, and lead to a god circle.
There are things that one cannot understand without going there or
doing something there.
I will buy things from these disaster areas by hoping that it will help
support the people there even though it is a very little thing.

Yesterday I participated a wine tasting event held at
a small urban hide-away hotel in Kagurazaka, Tokyo.
The admission fee is 10,000 yen per person. I hope everybody
enjoyed it. It was a precious experience to me.
Today after returning from Tokyo, I went to see how the
first Forest Festival went on at Sugadaira highland.
It did not rain too much there, many people came to join and
it seemed quite successful. The tako(octobus) ball vendor said that
his food had sold too fast and ran out of the ingredients. He would
prepare more for tomorrow, said he.
There are so many fun and tasty foods there.
